Default 1 year Masters degree in Canada

Sorry this might be a bit of a random question but does anyone know if 1 year Masters degrees exist in Canada?

I am due to finish my BSc soon after studying part-time for the last several years. I've been offered a couple of places on postgrad courses in the UK but I'm interested in possibly returning to Canada and the student route could be a way to do that and kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

All the courses I have seen online seem to be for 2 years though and there doesn't seem to be a simple alternative to something like Coursefinder in Canada.

Also, would previous residence and work experience in Canada generally exclude someone from successfully applying for a Canadian study permit? I realise that the second question might be a 'how long is a piece of string' type of situation so apologies if that's the case.

Thanks.

It would probably be for some sort of IT or Computing-based subject by the way.

Welcome back to BE

Second question regarding previous residence I don't think will have any bearing on whether you'll be accepted for a study permit

You could try looking at these:

Top Master's Programs in Canada 2016
https://www.findamasters.com/search/courses.aspx?CID=CA
Masters Degrees and Post-Graduate Diplomas in Canada | Canada 123

Just make sure that the Uni/College is on the approved list if you are hoping for a Post-Grad work permit (though if it's only a 1 year course you will only get a 1 year work permit I believe).

It doesn't. At least not in a University.

That's not strictly true as there are some extensions to a bachelor's that will give you a master's in a year. But generally speaking stand alone programs are two years. That said, if you got your finger out you could load up with as many credits as possible, plus do summer courses and could do it in year and half. You'd want to pick a non thesis option though as you might get a knobhead as an advisor who enjoys holding up students who they deem are fast tracking through the degree.

Wow is that a problem in Canada as well? My friend married an American last year who had the same issue with her Masters degree in the US. The whole arrangement sounds a bit suspect to me.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks anyway though.

Stay in Canada after graduation

Thanks, I think the 1 year study plus 1 year work permit could be enough, especially since my other half could work for the whole 2 years anyway.

It wouldn't necessarily need to be a master's degree either, some sort of postgraduate diploma would be fine. From what I've seen so far the tuition fees are all over the place though. They start at around £4-5k per year and can go up to £20k or more per year I think.

generally master's degrees are two years in North American (they take 4 to do a bachelors opposed to our three).

Be careful taking a non-thesis option I have found some employers look down on them. Also if your eventual plan is PR try and get a degree from a University close to where you want to live, I have found employers to be biased towards graduates from certain universities.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. The trouble there though is that the colleges and Universities that are close to the areas of most opportunity (e.g. Toronto and Vancouver) also tend to be the most expensive but I guess that situation is the same in almost every country.

The only people I know who look down on or even both with asking about a thesis are PhD programs. In fact, apart from accounting or bumping up your pay as a teacher I don't think masters are worth the trouble. We used to hand them out like confetti as consolation prizes when people failed with their PhD. research.

As a geotechnical Enginner they are very important as you can't do a bachelors in it only in civils or geology. Generally in Engineering they allow you to specialise.

Many, if not all, of the regulated professions allied to medicine are Masters level entry in Canada.

I think you're right, training schools do put more stock in them as its mostly their terminal degree.
