Private companies offering "even less options" than what?
It's not germane but the Cooperators isn't a private company, btw, the clue is in the name. It does surprise me that there are AB companies writing business in the Yukon, I didn't think there were any in AB, what are they called? True YK is the short form of the Yukon Territory but is also accepted as being short for Yellowknife which is located in the Northwest Territories. As for which companies do offer coverage in Alberta for the NWT I dont recall as I ended up getting my coverage through the Co-Op. |

Bike insurance need not be prohibitive, if you can get acceptance of no claims history. I pay $100 p/mth for a ZX10-R.

Not really, it's not that dissimilar to what I paid for a similar class of bike in the UK, but I insured year round there, whereas here just for 6 months. Not really any pricier than a seasons pass for the ski hill.

Re: $4500/yr car insurance with three star?
Husband and I are with Johnsons they accepted our UK history. Husband has 6* and I have 4*. We found them to be cheap her we moves here June 10, we used RBC first and was expensive the went to Johnsons after being here 6 months.

Re: $4500/yr car insurance with three star?
Have you tried Intact? They took into consideration our UK history (via a broker at Ensurco) and we got it for $3500 or so. They put it up in the 2nd year but I got a better quote at TD ($2700 I think) and went with them. We were in downtown Toronto.
Interestingly we got a new car about a month after the new policy started, changing from a Mazda 3 hatchback to a small SUV and it came down $80 a month, so the car sometimes does make a difference. Probably because of the typical driver profile of a Mazda 3.... The $4000 quote is not far off the mark though I'm afraid...not much you can do! |

Just called State Farm for an additional quote. They say (and I quote):
"There aren't any insurance companies in Canada that take UK no-claims history into account" Can anyone confirm that their insurance co. took their UK history into account? Or did they just say they did???? Confused now...! But you need to live in the area here I think to make it worth your while, but again one never knows. |

Just a quick update... apparently the crazy quotes are due to us living in fair Mississauga. Rates for Milton (16km further out from Toronto) are almost half. Also I got some discount for taking out contents insurance, and there'll be another discount for a second car.
We're still talking $3700-odd a year though... quite a shock ! I have a feeling there's money to be made by starting an insurance company specialising in "new Canadians"... just like grey power for the 55+ market. If I knew anything about the insurance business, I'd make it happen straight away ! Hope she can help you out if you are not yet sorted.. |
Re: $4500/yr car insurance with three star?
Thanks for all the recommendations! We've been told that the stratospheric premium we pay is almost entirely due to living in Mississauga. If we we were to move to Halton (Milton/Oakville) then the premium would be cut in half straight away...!
In the end, we managed $3700-something per year, for one person and one car, by taking out property insurance with the same company. I had previously refused to consider that possibility, thinking that it was a sales trick. But it does seem possible to pay less overall by taking out extra insurance?! I've long given up trying to understand how the insurance business in Canada works. By the way, I've run these premiums past an ex-colleague who is familiar with the UK insurance business, and he was floored by the quotes. His first comment was: "someone must be making an awful amount of money" |
