Just to add my 2 cents worth.. We are using Allstate. They used 3 years of my uk driving history. We have a 2009 Kia and the cost $1500 for the 2 of us. Thats compared to the first quote i got which was nearly $7000. We live near Cambridge Ontario

It looks like car insurance quotes are only good for Ontario - which works in this case. I didn't work through the process so no idea how good it is.

It does look like the site has a decent list of products for mortgage compares, savings etc. Not quite as good as moneysavingsupermarket in the UK but might be useful to some.

I think what's killing this is probably the lack of a credit history. A company I, ahem, know well, loads the premium three times if the prospective customer has a poor credit rating or won't allow a search. I think the best bet is to keep trying companies in the hope of finding one that doesn't use that as a factor, ideally one that still discounts for female drivers. Did you try TD Meloche Melons (or similar), they're reputed to be behind the times technically.

It doesnt deal well with an insurance history longer than license history, or an absence of g1 / g2 license. Kanetix.ca at least offers the option of previous foreign licensing now IIRC.

We may have got ours cheaper with Stevenson and Hunt due to having multiple insurances with them? or we live in London and not GTA? Clutching at straws really.

A quick glance at the chart in your link though shows more deaths per kilogram in Canada than in the US. All the European countries are much safer. Alas, it doesn't show the Asian countries.

Just a quick update... apparently the crazy quotes are due to us living in fair Mississauga. Rates for Milton (16km further out from Toronto) are almost half. Also I got some discount for taking out contents insurance, and there'll be another discount for a second car.

We're still talking $3700-odd a year though... quite a shock !

I have a feeling there's money to be made by starting an insurance company specialising in "new Canadians"... just like grey power for the 55+ market. If I knew anything about the insurance business, I'd make it happen straight away !

Trouble is, the driving ability of the new Canadians is such that, if they are of Asiatic orgin and if they drive as badly across Canada as they do in Calgary, the premiums collected will nowhere near cover the cost of the damage caused.

A problem for the new insurer is that it's not lawful to discriminate based on country of origin. Similarly, depending on the province, it may not be lawful to discriminate based on age or sex. The companies are left to set the rate based on the worst case.

On this point, I agree with you completely for once. Insurance in Ontario is a rip off. I was lucky when I came back to the GTA to find (through a broker) a company who would accept my 8 year claim free record from Germany and by now I have the lowest possible rate available.

But I've just bought my kid (in Regina) an old runabout (a 2001 Corolla). Although he's driven on my policy for several years, he's never had a policy in his name anywhere, ever.

He's paying $78 a month through the Saskatchewan provincial insurance scheme. That's $936 a year. I'd expect $3-4,000 in the GTA.

That's true, but take the (purely hypothetical) case of, say, a Belgian and a Dutch person with 10 years of driving history in the UK. The company would set rates (and discriminate) based on where the NCD was incurred (and its quality) - which doesn't mean they discriminate on country of origin, right?
