$4500/yr car insurance with three star?
My wife (with 5 years of UK no claims history and 5 additional years of named driving experience on a company car) has just received a 3 star car insurance quote of $4500 per year... this includes a discount as it's a group policy organized by her professional organisation.
I gave Johnson's a call (as per the Wiki) and they didn't even WANT to provide us with a quote. They did refer us to "belair direct" who duly produced a $6017 quote !!!
Any suggestions ?
Thanks !

Take an advanced drivers course in Canada.?
Live near a bus route...
Shop around more, often dealing with a human broker in the flesh can help with getting any no claims recognised, but yes, as you are finding out, insurance is a rip off.
Get an old crap beater mobile, insure it for liability only ($2M is the recommended minimum now), and put the largest deductable you think you can afford on it, $1000, $2000, more?
Then with a canadian history future premiums will come down.
Where are you and what are you trying to insure out of curiosity, not that vehicle makes much difference here.

Move to a Province with Govt run and no private insurance companies such as Saskatchewan, Manitoba etc
There are lots of companies who will give outrageous quotes tell us where you are and Im sure someone will suggest a company.

See suggestions above about buying a beater and insuring minimally with maximum deductable.
On the plus side at least Missisiagua has decent transit should you decide insurance isnt worth it.

Failing that put the highest deductable on the policy that they will allow and see what that does for premiums?

Ok, I've gotten a quote from TD, Desjardins, belair, Johnsons, and the professional organisation's group insurance.
NONE of those companies are willing to take her UK no claims history into account, and as a result the cheapest quote is $4000/year.
Where are we going wrong?

Johnsons let us use our no claims bonus that was 5 1/2 years ago we were well under $1,000 for 2 vehicles. still with them still under $1,000 for 3 vehicles now. Were in cape breton don't know if that makes much difference
I do know they don't give you full ncb same as when you go back to blighty they don't give you full ncb thats how they make the big bucks $$$$$

Just called State Farm for an additional quote. They say (and I quote):
"There aren't any insurance companies in Canada that take UK no-claims history into account"
Can anyone confirm that their insurance co. took their UK history into account? Or did they just say they did???? Confused now...!

Also, everyone wants to know the date her Ontario driving license was issued (January 2012 !)
When I explain she's been driving on a UK licence since 1995, they say they can't take that into account either...
(Exchanged UK licence for Canadian G a few days ago)

Yes - TD came up with the best quote: $4035/yr.
Edited to add: have not checked online - will try. I would have thought the online system would definitely not take UK history into account, as it's only designed to deal with straightforward cases? So what do I fill in when the system asks me how much of a history I have? If I fill in 4 years, I'm pretty sure the company will jack up the rates once they figure out it's not North American driving experience?

Stephenson and Hunt, London, Ontario. We pay $1200 for a Mazda Tribute 4 x 4 2litre manual. Moved over August 2011. They asked for verification from UK insurer re no claims Must point out that original quote from them was $2700 but we put the Mazda under the business (OH is self employed) and we have house contents insurance and public liability insurance with them and we did our temp 3 months medical insurance with them as well so the price dropped somewhat.
