$100,000 Free!

Only catch is, you need to be a GP willing to work in rural(ish) BC for a minimum of 3 years.

The B.C. Medical Association and the provincial government are teaming up to offer a big carrot to doctors to get them to practice in several rural areas.

Family doctors and specialists who commit to three years in one of 17 designated communities will get a special payment of $100,000.

The communities are Bella Coola, Burns Lake, Chetwynd, Clearwater, Cranbrook, Galiano Island, Hazelton, Kitimat, Nakusp, Pemberton, Port Alberni, Port Hardy, Princeton, Quesnel, Terrace, Tofino and Tumbler Ridge.

I wonder how long the offer is open for? Our eldest son is training to be a GP but still has a few years to go so hopefully these incentives are still around then.

Hopefully not - those communities need doctors now, not in several years. Tofino's hardly a bad place to have to commit to 3 years.

Somewhat confusingly, we live near one of the towns listed above and actually had a choice of GPs when we arrived, unlike when we lived in Edmonton and had to wait 2 years to get one?

Yeah, Nakusp is pretty nice too. I was surprised at some of the places on the list.

They're always trying to lure people out into the rural areas to improve the quality of life there. Another program I heard about was that you can also get loans of up to $150,000 if you start a business in a rural community (from community futures bc).

Big difference between a $150,000 loan (ie repayable, millstone round your neck) and a $100,00 sweetener (ie not repayable, spend spend spend).......

I know which I would be wanting.......
