Default What to do with UK car in NL?

Dear forum,

Due to the lockdown I didnt fly but rather drove to The Netherlands when relocating last July; however I am now unable to sell my car - the Dutch aren’t really interested in right hand drive cars... - and dont really want to drive back to the UK given the mandatory quarantine etc. Any advice is appreciated! Many thanks.

Easiest option is to drive it back, unfortunately. You have no hope selling or part exchanging here; we ended up scrapping ours because its MOT ran out (couldn't drive it here or there). You could go through the expense of having Dutch plates put on but it's for you to decide if it's really worth the effort and the expense (plus it's easier to drive in a LHD vehicle when driving on the right).

From reports of people in city centres here and back in the UK, it seems people don't treat the quarantine as mandatory. You have until your insurance or your MOT runs out to take it back, but if you want a financial return, this is pretty much the only way.

You may have difficulty selling, or even scrapping, a car in the Netherlands that is not registered in the Nethelands, as the buyer (incl scrap delaer) has no way to verify that it isn't stolen without the burden (from a Dutch perspective) on the buyer of proving the ownership via registration records in the UK.

Your easily available choices appear to be [1] returning the car to the UK yourself, [2] paying a shipper to return it to the UK for you, or [3] selling it to a British citizen/ resident who is returning to the UK, or [4] finding someone who is willing to return it anyway. [2] is going to be relatively expensive, and may not be worth it for you, and [3] and [4] are going to be rather unlikely.

The other alternatives are to register the vehicle in the Netherlands, then find a buyer locally, and ironically this may be the only way to dispose of the vehicle for scrap or parts, and therefore your only practical way out of your conundrum assuming that you don't have the space and equipment to store it while parting it out, and/or cutting it up yourself to dispose of it piecemeal.

If you have somebody to pick it up from the docks on the other side, you could send it unaccompanied; I did it once, just took the car to Hoek van Holland and my mate collected it from Hull.
