Default UK registered car - Dutch citizen driver

Hi all,

I live in UK, i have a wheelchair adapted car on my name that my mother uses, who is disabled. My mother lives in Netherlands, so it is a problem to use when I am not there.
My question is, is there a way my borther-in-law could drive the car occasionally, fully legally without changing the licence plates to dutch ones?
He is dutch citizen with a dutch address, also with a dutch driving license.

Cheers,
Ben

If the car is based in the Netherlands then you should re-register it there. Most UK insurance policies only allow for 90 days travel to the EU. If it’s been there longer than that then no-one is insured to drive it.

First of all your brother in law may not drive the car at all in the Netherlands.

Secondly the status of the car being insured is questionable, and the fines for this are very high in the Netherlands, and could even lead to confiscation.

Thirdly, the vehicle is a conversion for the disabled, meaning a non-standard vehicle. The standards and requirements in NL for this kind of vehicle differ to those in the UK. Importing it may therefore not be a realistic option.

It would have to undergo an inspection anyway, plus based on the age of the vehicle you would probably have to pay some VAT or Vehicle tax (BPM) on it.
