Your favourite Ozzie?

Just out of interest if you had to pick one who is your favourite Australian? Alive, dead, real or fictional??

I'll go for Chopper, mainly for his humanitarian work.

Off the top of my head, I'd say Albert Facey. He was an ordinary Australian man born in the late 1800s who lived through the last days of the goldfields, the opening up of Western Australia to settlers, the harsh life of a cattle drover in the Bush, Gallipoli and the Great Depression. Towards the end of his life (I think he died in the 1980s), his family persuaded him to write down his life story, and he sought a printer for what he saw was a personal record for his family. However, his story is so amazing and moving, that he was persuaded by publishers to release the story for the general public.

He suffered so much hardship and loss in his life, so it says a lot about his character that his autobiography was titled A Fortunate Life, because he was grateful for his family and the scope of his life experiences. Strangely, I was urged to ready his book by two different people at the same time last year.

It was a great memoir. Albert Facey represents the archtypical honourable digger spirit of Australia.

As a kid it was Ed (Matt Hammond) he was up there with James Bond. But as I got older, Liza Goddard (Clancy Merrick), but never Skippy as I was convinced he was bad (he had an evil look).

Cooler
