Everyone calls you mate - even the rather butch women, all the cars are two storey trucks and everyone is wearing some sort of mining company logo shirt. Facilities - swimming pools, skate parks, shopping malls are all sponsored by a mining company*

But interestingly I haven't yet noticed that from the kids here yet - unlike in the UK (the southeast at least) where it's very common

Yes. It seems to have different connotations. In the UK it's a touch derogatory and here i'm not really sure - habit?

That's a good point, if I get called mate from a stranger here I'm fine with it whereas in the UK (and it does depend a bit but) often I think "You don't even know me how can I be your mate?" And if one of my sons friends calls me "mate" <...grrr>

Just a thought it would be interesting if Aussie TV did their own version of "Grumpy Old Men" I was sitting in a barber shop on Monday morning and you should have heard them...

...Or even "Grumpy Old Women"

All depends on the intonation:

"Maaaaate?" .... What are you doing?

"Mate." ... Stop what you are doing and listen to me

"Mate!" ... You, sir, have lost a game of chess

"Mate?" ... You, madam, have pulled

The spelling mistakes you see in Newspapers, leaflets and advertisements don't bother you QUITE/QUIET? as much.

....nor do you ponder over why on earth should almost every block of cheese be called 'Tasty'

YKYAIAW:
1) the word Coon is removed from the taboo list and thrust onto supermarket shelves and into everyday use, but you still feel a little uneasy using it.
COON!!

2) you need Brand Power to help you buy better.

re the second point, its a personal gripe of mine: whatthef**kisthepoint of brandpower?! why does it even exist?

edit: I reduced the number of question marks and exclamations after brandpower. I got caught up in the moment. wont happen again
