The whole world, apart from the UK, uses overseas.

I have to say, overseas makes far more sense than abroad. It's good to get the looks of confusion when I occasionally forget and say abroad though.

I find it strange that some Aussies just refer to "overseas" as if everywhere outside of Aus is one big country. Hard to explain but they seem to often just say they are going overseas, like its a scary big place, whereas Brits are more likely to say they are going to the Uk, USA, Spain etc. One of my friendsis having an 'overseas holiday' this year - she's going to Tassie !

I have to laugh at the attempts made at psychoanalysing Australians' attitudes to foreign countries by what word they use to describe traveling over there.

It's purely a case of semantics, it's meaningless.

IMO, 'abroad' is a weird expression because it's so vague, it's almost a euphemism.

At least with the phrase 'overseas' you get a pretty good idea what people are talking about, especially if they are from an island continent where pretty much everywhere is over the sea.

"psychoanalysing" ?!! A couple of throwaway comments about phrases used by Aussies we know in a light-hearted thread!

Are you related to Badge by any chance?

The poster will fiercely defend Australia and anything that could even remotely be seen as criticism, I thought I was bad but I have nothing on this bloke

How funny when there's an Aussie expat site which uses abroad in its title
