Funny enough I was doing that on Saturday. We celebrated my younger son's 19th birthday with the most lavish dinner buffet that I've ever seen.

I'm hard pushed to find something negative to say about either country (other than UK winter weather) but I can honestly say I've never eaten a strawberry here that even begins to come close to a UK one in summer. Not a problem, would rather have raspberries anyway. (Disclaimer: not eaten a UK strawberry in over 10 years, could be talking bullshit )

That's another thing I find marvelous about Australia. You and I live on opposite ends of the continent yet we are both eating strawberries sourced most likely from the same farms and we're paying the same prices for them. Regional pricing doesn't seem to apply very much here at all.

From my experience, the only strawberries that I have found taste better are those "pick your own" berries that have ripened on the plant. I've only had those in the UK. The ones we buy in punnets (in both countries): there is not much to differentiate them, though I do find the ones on the market here and now are very high quality berries ripe and perfect for eating right away.

Looking forward to the next cherry bumper harvest

When we had the grocery/sub post office, we used to sell local strawberries. Picked by the farmer's family, delivered by the farmer, they were the most amazing things I've ever eaten.

I have to say that the strawberries we had over the weekend (yes, at $1 a punnet) probably came the closest to those in 8 years of Aussie living.

Conditions have obviously been very good for strawberry growing this season in Australia.

Now, if they could just sort out a new potato season that would be epic

Jersey new potatoes! Every summer there's a moment of sadness from all of us that we won't be experiencing their awesomeness. They were bloody expensive though and for obvious reasons we could never grow them.

Somebody told me that he could get Jersey Royals in Australia. I asked him to get me some time after time and eventually he turned up with a bag of "Jersey Royals" They were the size of big King Edwards and he assured me they were genuine just a bit bigger. Nope putrid mush and nothing like a bowl of steaming new potatoes lathered in butter and sprinkled with a few chopped fresh chives. Sod the meat give me the potatoes

And now down to 80c a punnet:
Big supermarkets blamed for driving 'ridiculous' strawberry prices

Farmers are bitching - but that's par for the course
