Well, unless you have particular skills that are in demand, I would suggest that should you lose you job in a few years time, that you would suddenly become "over qualified" for jobs. In other words "too old".
Combine that with living in an unemployment black spot, during one of the worse downturns for many a long year and I don't think his expectations, at aged 55, are that unrealistic. He might find work, but statistics suggest that his chance of finding work, at a similar salary, appear to be close to nil.

I would get in my car and drive any place in the UK that i thought i could have a sniff of a job. If i didn't want to relocate the family i would work away until such times as i could find work locally again. I can assure you that unless i am physically unable i would find a job.

Have you worked away from your family before?

Before you accuse me of something I suggest you check back at my posts and find me one, seriously, just one, anti UK comment or one where I've generalised about anything. Accuse me of many things but knocking the UK or generalising are most certainly not on the list.

My comment was actually in humour. There have been some seriously ridiculous statements made over the years. I also tend to ignore the more pointless comments. In Vash's case I did but in your case I didn't.

Sounds like you're generalising a bit there.

In saying that I remember having to tie a mates shoe laces after games because it was the first time he had actually had laces in his shoes.1975.
My mam worked at the co op at the end of that street.

I worked in the NHS, in a job that, when I started was always considered a 'job for life' as long as you passed the relevant exams. Even when I left in 2005 it was still considered very secure, and you would have had to commit some very serious breach of the rules to lose it. In 2008 almost 40% of the staff were made redundant or took early retirement due to amalgamation of departemnts, closing departments and transferring the work to another hospital. The rest had to reapply for the jobs they were currently doing. I'm just glad I had got out. as the qualifications I had were very job specific, and finding another job anywhere else would have been impossible.

No it didn't. The Co-op is long gone. Just a boarded up shell.

The loss of Mathers, along with all the jobs that went around Bradford Pit, really kicked the legs out from under the area. It wasn't great before, but that really sent it into a downward spiral. Did you know that BAe Chadderton has all gone now?
