am I correct in assuming that there are no circumstances under which wisdom teeth removal is done under medicare and that it is always a private medical cost to be incurred?

yes i need all 4 out going to cost $2000-$3000 been told to get dentalcare cover HBF have join now claim now thing on, a friend said you get $200 back per tooth its better than nothing.

Check this - often there is a waiting period of a year before you can claim for major dental

If it cannot be done in a dentist's surgery and needs a general anasthetic in hospital, you could possibly have it done in a government hospital - but you'd have to wait a year or more........

This is no different from the UK - long waiting period for hospital removal.

Unfortunately even if the wisdom teeth are being removed so that a surgeon can go in and break the jaw where those teeth were, you have to pay for the extractions. Tried to convince my daughter's surgeon that it was all part and parcel of her jaw surgery but he couldn't pass it on to Medicare. I'm still trying to find a way round it though ;)

I was told that to be entitled to hospital treatment that you have to be on benefits, does anyone know if this is the case?

My middle son has one baby tooth that does not have an adult tooth underneath, they want between $4500 and $6000 to remove it and place an implant in there:eek::eek: Its close enough to the front of his mouth that it has to be done, we have private but they are not going to pay that much of a rebate.

I nearly had to lie down after hearing that news:eek:

when i was 17 i needed my wisdom teeth out and was having to pay $3000 in day surgery OR $2000 for 2 sessions under a local with sedative.

As it turned out when i was 18 we went back to the uk and by 19 i had them out with the NHS - phew

It looks like my daughter may need 1 of her wisdom teeth out possibly at some stage -grrrr - maybe just in time for a gap year to the uk.

I had one wisdon tooth out at the dentists, cost $120 for it to be pulled out. I then had 2 more wisdom teeth out at Pindara private hospital on the Gold Coast, it cost $1700 that was for all the xrays and the day surgery and the follow up appointment. Nothing was claimable through medicare.

I was told in 1994 that I must have my wisdies out, otherwise I'd be in trouble.

At the time I thought Bo11ok5, and 15yrs later funnily enough I'm fine. My current dentist says I have lovely teeth. :D

So unless you are writhing around in agony, have a think about why you are bothering............ are they really a problem, or is the dentist just ar5e-covering and following 'the rules'?

No, completely incorrect - I had one extracted in October and it cost me $0 as it was bulk billed like all my dental treatment to date.

My sister's partner back home has just found out that he has two sets of wisdom teeth - so he's facing double the financial pain for getting them removed:ohmy:

Not is he's living in Northern Ireland, he can go to the Ulster Hospital and have them taken out for free:thumbsup: My OH did.

I had to. Absolute agony, nowhere for them to go so they were growing into my back teeth. I was in serious pain. Only one was removed at the dentists, they didn't want to attempt 2 others as they were close to nerves and growing at the wrong angle for easy removal. In the hospital they actually cut along the top of 2 teeth to be able to get in there properly. My last one is nearly through, not causing me any trouble so leaving that one where it is.

My daughter's aren't through yet but she has to have hers removed because her surgeon needs the gap so he can saw through both jaws :eek: otherwise believe me, if they came through happily, they'd stay where they were.

I don't even know if I have mine through. Never been aware of any coming through and never had any problem. Hubby had four impacted that were causing major grief, he had to have them removed.

If you're in pain, you have precious little choice. I had about 8 or 10 infections over the course of 2 years - requiring antibiotics each time to bring down the swelling - before I got mine removed.

Are you sure about this Lynn? If so, I will certainly tell him, thanks! He's in Fermanagh and he's working, so I don't know how that affects things. When I was still home (Fermanagh) I had mine removed in Altnagelvin, but I wasn't working at the time, so that was why it didn't cost me anything.

Absolutely positive:) He was also working in Parliament Buildings at the time. Maybe a hospital closer to your BIL's home does it but he definatly had them done. I asked him once I had posted and he assured me:lol: The RVH also has a school of dentistry - he could try there.

I'm not special at all, I just go to a dentist that bulk bills his patients. Obviously not all dental treatment is covered. e.g. he told me that if I needed to have my root canal treatment re-done, that would be $500. I've been going there for approx 3 or 4 years and I've never had to pay for any of my checkups, fillings etc.

Squeezzie, if you live in Brisbane send me a pm & I'll give you his details. If you don't live in Brisbane, the only thing I can recommend would be to call around your local dentists and ask them if they bulk bill or not. It isn't very common, but I'm sure that most towns/cities will have 1 or 2 dentists that will bulk bill.

Thought I'd add to this as I was referred to public hospital, had specialist (maxiofacial) appointment in January and had them out under general anesthetic last week. Two were badly impacted so not sure if this impacted on anything but it was all covered under medicare, I didn't pay a cent. I didn't have to wait that long for the initial appointment either.

It all seems a bit hit and miss!!
My youngest son had to have all 4 removed, they were impacted and growing completely horizontal along the gum, a big problem especially as he had worn full sets of braces only 2 years previous. The wisdom teeth were undoing the work of the braces!!!:eek:
Cost........................only just over $3000!!!!!:eek::eek:

I've still got two baby teeth. The upper canines to be exact. I'm now 31 and they're still there :)
