Certainly was a deciding factor for us...

"Children growing up in the United Kingdom suffer greater deprivation, worse relationships with their parents and are exposed to more risks from alcohol, drugs and unsafe sex than those in any other wealthy country in the world, according to a study from the United Nations.
The UK is bottom of the league of 21 economically advanced countries according to a "report card"' put together by Unicef on the wellbeing of children and adolescents, trailing the United States which comes second to last."

That sort of stuff was certainly right at the top of our list for leaving the UK.

Hows the saying go:
"There are three types of lies - lies, damn lies, and statistics"

The British press seem to come up with one of these every week "people living in the UK are 11% more likely to develop anus cancer then people in Norway"....

Not sure that Australia was included - 21 countries? (i.e. not the whole of the OECD.

(bearing in mind the number of Brits here I did wonder if Australia would have similar rates!)

Bit hard to make the conclusion australias better if it was not measured but wonder how many will make that assumption.

UNICEF have been highly critical of australia and its child welfare in particular to aboriginals, would be interesting to have seen where australia would have come if aboriginals were included, were they?

Here's the full report for anyone who wants to analyse it. I can't be bothered to read it all.

Australia is mentioned in there though and looks (at a quick glance) to be just marginally ahead of the UK.

Havent read it yet (working) but would be quite funny if UK and OZ were similar postitions, would the aus press do what the UK press has done and latch on and made out australia is a cesspit of child depravity

Same position but two very different media reactions.

Now that'll be worth seeing. I just don't get it though. When they gather all those stat's, do they consider all areas of a country? I can say with all honesty that where we came from back home, we rarely heard of or saw any trouble and, the kids, IMO, had more opportunities than we've seen here in over 10 years. Please don't tell me things have changed where we came from either, because my family and friends are still there and we have been back recently.

Have read the reports and the article and it (the Guardian article) certainly didn't come across as suggesting that the UK was some 'cesspit of child depravity', as you alude to.

It states the facts - such as "The UK is bottom of the league of 21 economically advanced countries according to a "report card"' put together by Unicef on the wellbeing of children and adolescents."

I mean, this is Unicef we're talking about here - not some vox-pop street poll conducted by the Daily Mail.
