Re: Why do people get more colds chest infections in Oz
My son who was 5 years at the time spent 2 weeks in Brisbane Children's Hospital with pneumonia, ended up with a drain in his chest, it was an awful time. We had only been here a couple of years and to me pneumonia was an old persons disease, having spoken to others at school after the nightmare it seems that pneumonia is one of those things that people know of and had experience of over here, my friends and family at the time in the UK just couldn't believe he had it, it was the middle of summer and snuck up on us so quickly.
On the Saturday he was swimming on the Monday he was in agony and in hospital, still feel like the worse parent in the world for not spotting it but it honestly came on so quickly even the doctors couldn't believe it.... left him with asthma but it could have been so much worse.

I had pneumonia this time last year, I'm in my late 20s. Also had shingles about 18 months ago. Rarely used to be sick in the UK.

They don't. Well some do. Some don't. Some get colds and chest infections in other places as well.

We've been here two years. Can't say we've had any more chest infections. In fact, I think we've had fewer than when we lived in Canada.
Now hay fever, that's another story. Every September, three of us are sniffling, coughing, and sneezing for weeks. Mornings are the worst, real typical allergy stuff. The first two Septembers here I dragged the kids to the GP. Now I know what it is and that it will pass...eventually. By mid-October, everyone's fine.

Yeah, it's miserable, isn't it? It's funny, I hear lots of expats say that they either didn't have allergies before arriving here and then had to contend with it right away their first spring or others like you...years of nothing, then ta-da, hay fever out of nowhere. Makes you wonder what the deal is with WA pollen...
