Re: Where to live in Sydney
So much info, so many choices! I guess the best way is to make a list of essentials and desirables and look at what you can afford?
exciting tho... |

Re: Where to live in Sydney
Anyone know much about Maricksville?? Mrs and I are a late twenties couple with a tight budget and heard this was a decent suburb?

Re: Where to live in Sydney
I like Marrickville. We lived at Drummoyne and its not as nice as there but lots of my friends lived there and its fine. Safe enough, some nice shops, easy for the city. Theres a mix of nationalities but I dont think that is necessarily a bad thing.
Take a look when you get to sydney and decide. Its not a suburb I would arrange to live in site unseen. Vivienne |
Re: Where to live in Sydney
Marrickville is a strange one. Originally it would have been your average kind of suburb - working class, definitely not flash. Then after the war it became very popular with Greek migrants. More recently Lebanese and later-on Vietnamese have moved in.
Nowadays it's heading towards trendiness - but it's not quite got there yet. People who'd like to live in Newtown but can't afford it, tend to move there. Houses are mostly 1920's/1930's free standing - not so many terraces so you get more house (and land) for your money than Newtown. There are a few 1960's houses - mostly built by Greeks and usually complete with concrete gardens - and the odd new development and apartment block. It has a traditional main shopping street with a few cafes and lots of (cheap) ethnic restaurants. There also seems to be an inordinate number of fabric shops, for some reason. There's also biggish shopping mall on the border of Marrickville and Newtown (Marrickville Metro) which has everything you need, including an Aldi. If you want to live in the inner-west, I reckon it's a good spot. Cheaper than the trendier inner-west suburbs yet still close to the city. I believe it'll only improve over time. :) |

For me, here is my advice for thousands of folks who want to come to the northern beaches: Don't come...It's not great and it has no attractions...He he he... |
