Where to live in Perth???????????

Hi Everyone,

We would like to move to Perth when we get our Visa (fingers crossed), but are not sure where to go? Could you give us some background on any areas in the South PLEASEEEEEEEE!

My OH is a roofer, we have two children aged 11 and 14yrs and I work in an office doing admin for a scaffolding firm. We would like to live by the beach in a good area, away from the city & somewhere with good schools.

Any advice or information would be great.

Thanks

Little Lisa:thumbsup:

Hi Guys,
I'm a plasterer moving to the Perth area in August this year. I have all the same ?'s as you guys.
Keep in touch and after we find what to do/not to do, where to be/where not to be etc etc we hopefully can give you some advice. When do you move out here?

Cheers for now Josh & co.

Fremantle is nice...............can be a bit pricey.
It all depends on how much money you have to buy a house as prices vary greatly

Hi there,

We are hoping to come out to Perth and have been researching areas to visit on our reccie. Secret Habour and Settlers Hills at Baldivis look fab. Fairly near the freeway too so not too much of a commute if hubbys job is in CBD.

Lakelands is also good as is Meadow Springs.

Have a look on Googlemaps, its fab cos you can drag the little yellow man onto the road and walk round the area at street level toget a feel of the place. I', kinda addicted to doing that, very sad I know

We were hoping to be in Aus by July 2010! I don't know how likely that is now as the wait seems to be growing by the day but we'll keep our fingers crossed :fingerscrossed:

Good luck everyone:thumbsup:

Secret Harbour and Baldivis are long commutes if your husband works in the CBD. Especially during rush hour.

Only areas to avoid S.O.R are the SE corridor, Vic Park Cannington, Gosnells, Maddington, Thornlie, Kelmscott, Armadale etc and Hamilton Hill, parts of Spearwood, Kwinana (Wellard's ok), Byford. We live in the Cockburn area which is booming nicely and you can still pick up land or a pad fairly reasonably there as well. Just a quick reply but hope it gives you some pointers......

hi jo noticed you are from same neck of the woods as us (lived in Thornton)
we have lived in secret harbour over 2yrs now so if we can help out give us a pm/email
answer to some of your questions,at the moment the freeway is around 45 /60 mins to cbd,but depends what time of day you start work from secret harbour,
at the moment freeway extension is being fininshed so will cut 5/10 mins off time to get to freeway
settlers hills nice area 5 mins inland from secret harbour has small shopping centre
we have teenage daughter and 10yr old boy and have no regrets what so ever secrets is ideal if you love chilled beach lifestyle(still feels as though we are still on hols) anyway ill keep it short not on here to often these days
regards Dave

Kelmscott/Armadale is beautiful yet affordable.

The area also has several good government schools at both primary and high school level that allow kids an amazing diversity of opportunities.

Kelmscott /Armadale is not about flashy big "estate" homes built on swamps!

Re: Where to live in Perth???????????

My advice would be don't rush into an area until you have arrived and looked at all the options, give yourself some time in a good holiday let for a few weeks and have a drive round both the north and south suburbs - you will be surprised how your opinions change.
We have been here 7 months and are still not sure if we are in the right area, it's not that we don't like the area, it's really nice and next to the beach but the school choices are limited, you tend to get lots of good primary schools but there are very few decent high schools in Perth and you have to be in the catchment areas for them which means paying a premium on the house prices.
The only other option, which most parents reluctantly do, is private. Again these vary - the nearer the city the better the school's reputation but again very expensive.
You really won't know until you are here, we totally went off the area we thought we really wanted to live in when we arrived, we spend hours on the internet before we came looking at schools, houses, commuting etc and had even had a month here to look around before we came and thought we had made up our minds. It's only when you live here and get talking to other parents and locals that you can see things more clear.
Something else to consider is work, if your oh is likely to travel to sites he may find the only work available is in Butler or Yanchep then you have to be prepared to travel. We have found this out the hard way, we live in Jindalee and my oh has had to travel down to Secret Harbour at times for work -at the end of the day work is work and at the moment you have to take what is available, there is work but the construction industry is saturated with tradesmen all trying to get work.
Good luck it is really exciting and well worth it.
Debbie

Hi,

We live in south Perth (Piara waters) which is near the Canning Vale area. We only came over in february but we really like the area. Its close to the freeway so access to the city is easy. If your husband is a roofer then I'm sure there is plenty of work around this area as there are a lot of new estates being built around here. Sorry can't help with schools as my little ones aren't old enough for school yet!!! Good luck with everything,

Emma

"flashy big "estate" homes built on swamps!", hardly objective............. It's all about social demography my friend and one man's meat is another man's poison. The south east corridor is a dump, would agree that the land around armadale and kelmscott is beautiful but that's where it ends............

Disclaimer; I neither live in a flashy estate home or on a swamp......;o))

My husband said we couldn`t live in Gosnells, but Maddington would be okay! I wonder if that has anything to do with his friend/drinking buddy living in Maddington...?
