What would you do???

Hi guys, heres our dilemma.....

we have just received our 175 visas, and have booked flights for 10 april (as this was the cheapest time). We had to put the flights, hotal etc on the old plastic fantastic due to hubby being out of work here for the last 2 months (we would pay this back by transfering money each month from aussie account).

anyhoo we have flight booked, have spoken to an estate agent and he said rent on our house would be double our mortgage repayments, this has spurred me to think that if we put house to rent before we leave and get a tenant we could in theory go one way. Trouble is hubby is sensible sally and having no jobs practically no money and no home in oz, thinks we should go for the holiday and then save up for 2 years to go for good . What would be the chance of him getting work as a brickie in oz, he has got his blue card to work in Queensland, just needs tax ref no. (have read some threads that say good, other day bad, dont know what to believe :() and getting a rental in the weeks we are over on a holiday. In one way he is right to come back and save up, but i have waited 2 years to get to the stage of visa grant. I dont know what to do.

any advise would be great. thanks x:wub:

Hiya,

I know exactly how you feel. We got our visas in Jan but are in no position financially to move now. I'd love to go but sensible hubby (rightly) thinks we should stay here and be debt free and with a bit of cash in our pockets when we go. Frustrating as it is to still be in smelly London, the dream of starting a new life would be put to the test if we arrived with sod all to get us started. So we're going to validate in September then come back and save hard to move next year.

Suppose it boils down to whether you're comfortable taking the risk or not.

Sucks doesn't it??!

Sure does, doesnt help the agent gave us the fantastic news that our house is worth £35,000 less than last year :thumbsup: (there goes our nest egg :()

Bloody hell, that's rough! We're almost lucky in that we rent so we won't have to try and offload a house. Only advatange to having to wait a bit is that the economy might have started to recover I suppose...although that's probably a bit optimistic!

Re: What would you do???

We're in the same boat, can't sell the house and if we rent it out it will cover the mortgage (just!)

We've decided that lifes too short, so we're going out on a one way flight in June.

I know that it might be more prudent to wait till hopefully things start to pick up with the economy, both here and there but our eldest is due to go to High school this year and i think if we don't make the move now it'll be too hard for her (and us!) to move later.

The way I look at it is we don't intend to buy straight away anyway, so hopefully when the time comes for us to buy over there the UK market will have picked up and we won't have given our house away for silly money!

I don't think we could have picked a worse time to try to move, but hopefully things will work out in the end  At least thats what i keep telling myself!

Re: What would you do???

are you going with a lump sum behind you?, or have jobs lined up?

our best option would be to rent it out for few years, but just need the initial lump sum to help us when we arrive in oz. How much would you say would be a comfortable sum to arrive with (that would be possible to save?)

arrghh it's so frustrating, this time last year house was worth good money, and there were loads of jobs advertised for hubby, now the opposite :(

like someone upstairs doesnt want us to make it there:(

If you have the balls I'd say go for it now. Yes, it is a risk but at the end of the day would you be in any sort of a better position in 2 years time? You could look back and wish you had done it now. In 2 years time he may well say lets save a bit more.

If the rent on your property really will be double your mortgage then you are in a good positon but remember to take into account the tax you will need to pay on it as well as insurance and any repairs required. Agents will also deduct a fee so your double may actually only be a bit above the mortgage once all that has been paid. BUT - at least you would be in profit and not making a loss.

Yes, it is a crap time for all of us wanting to make the move but things may be worse in 2 years time. Who knows what is round the corner - are you brave enough to take the gamble?

Gooc luck with your decision.

No lump sum (well unless we sell the house in the next few weeks!), or jobs we're flying by the seat of our pants as they say

Although hubbys in IT and his current company wants to keep him on over there on a part time basis so at least thats a bit of an income............we'll see

nothing ventured, nothing gained!

thanks!! also congrats to you guys. we are heading to Brisbane land 12 april! cant wait!!

i would go one way , but then i have no concept of consequences!! hubby is too sensible to let me :( ( boring git!!). I suppose having 2 kids in tow makes it a bit more risky, if we cock up it is them that will suffer. Also may well be the rebel in me that wants to go one way because MIL keeps wispering in hubbys ear (when she thinks im not taking notice!) to "go for a holiday and then come back and save up for a few years, visas are valid until 2014, gloom and doom, blah blah blah.."), all she is short of is a scythe:mad:.

Although I think in fairness she only wants us to go quicker so she can plan her next trip out..they only got back this morning after THREE MONTHS with my brother...:blink::eek:
