With this thread I was just curious to see what services Australia didnt have, that people perhaps just expected it to, another thing that has surprised me is no takeaway style foods in the supermarkets.

Im not saying we need these things and you can easily exsist without them I was just curious what had surprised others X

Supermarket home delivery is catching on now....not that I ever used it.
In the 70,s 80, s home delivery was all the rage but seemed to die a natural death as familys bought a 2nd car.............mm

I've found it odd that there aren't many bookshops. Don't they read over here?

Although a lot of 'specialist' places in SE Melbourne tend to be located where it is easy to drive to them and park, rather than in a shopping centre.

Not sure about Adelaide, but up here almost all the supermarkets that I go to have a bottle shop right next door

So, do the grocery shopping, send the kids to load the car, and then do the adult drink shopping

That's certainly the case in the bogan suburbs. Look at people's homes - in general people do not own books or read but they have a pool table.

It is no accident that Chadstone which serves the affluent inner burbs and Knox the outer established burbs have good ones like Borders or equivalent, but Fountain Gate in 'Kath and Kim' territory pays lip service with a small Angus and Robertson.

Where are the ones you know about in Melbourne SE?

Many of the 'chain' bottle shops are owned by the supermarket groups.

Trainers, very hard to find a decent pair for my kids.

So more trainer shops please oh and clothes shops for kids between ages 8-14. More of them needed too.

Of course people read. And there are cheaper alternatives to the usual bookstores. Big W, Target and K-Mart all have book departments, generally 20 to 30% cheaper. Clearly their stock isn't as extensive but most of the best sellers can be found there. Libraries are a good free alternative too. I can take up to 40 titles out on my ticket. There's a great second hand bookstore near me too, but I am in South Australia, where the bogans are clearly more literate.
