What phone did you get your Year 7 kid?
Hi guys,
I got my year 7 daughter a cheap $50 nokia phone on a prepaid plan so I can call her on the days I will be late in picking her up.
although she didnt ask for a cellphone to beging with....she casually mentioned most of the girls in her class have iPhone 4-6 models...I am like, really? iPhone 6?? well you dont need a smartphone so your phone is a nokia.
just curious, what kind of phones did you get your pre-teen daughter?
thanks!

Basic prepay that makes and receives calls and texts. (Granted smart phones weren't about when my eldest hit high school but when they did roll them out, neither girl got one until they were 16+

I got mine the most basic phone for receiving and making phone calls and sending messages.I wanted them to have a phone for safety and peace of mine.No need for face booking or taking selfies while they are crossing the road.As she gets older and matures you can upgrade it.

My Year 7 has an iPhone 6 - I didn't buy it though, her father did. Dangerous things in the hands of 11 year old girls, duck faced selfies, video star, messaging and face timing your besties from the minute you wake til the time you go to sleep is a real pain.

Most of my friends have children around the ten to fourteen year age group. I do not no one child who does not have a smart phone, either an IPhone or a Samsung something or other. But its like when I was a kid, if you did not wear Adidas or some high end brand trainer, well the kids who wore non branded trainers were picked on, took the mickey out of, and sometimes those scars are carried into adulthood. I should no, I was one of those kids. So from my experience, give a kid what all other kids have. I was not strong enough to stand up for myself, and still carry the memories now. All because my parents did not see me suffering, they had the money but chose to buy cr"p for the house instead. But that's my point of view, might be wrong, but we all have a difference of experience and opinion.

Well, I would say a cheap Android smartphone, but that's because I would install a tracking app, say like Cerberus, so I could track where she was going and what she was up to.....

Probably wouldn't buy a child an iPhone but a wifi/skype capable phone with a front facing camera should be cheap and cheerful. Also make sure you set up the "find my phone" function so you can find track her phone when she loses it or its stolen or you need to find her.
As a parent this will give you years of unprecedented leverage over her social life which will be more important than the air she breathes for a few years .

Our daughter started yr 7 last year and we got her an iphone 4. It was second hand off ebay and we use Amaysim pay as you go. She's very happy with it and hasn't asked for an upgrade even though a lot of the girls in her class got an iPhone 6 at Christmas. It's used mainly to phone/text me which is what it was bought for. She may get an upgrade next Christmas as long as she doesn't stuff up and abuse the privilege of having a phone in the first place before then x

LOL my kids were in yr 7 well before mobile phones but I remember buying DS1 a Nokia (small) brick when he turned 18. He was disgusted and thought it was because we wanted to keep track of him (it was more because he liked to be ahead with technology and this was the first model away from very large brick!). His yr 12 mates were in awe that he had a mobile of his own so by the end of the day he had come around to thinking it a great trendy idea! He's been up to date with his tech stuff ever since! Would I have bought him a smart phone in this day and age - heck, I suppose so but a PAYG with minimal payments! The other DS has never owned a mobile and has an avowed aversion to them so I would have got him a Moleskine diary LOL

I think a fair few of you must be a lot younger than me. I honestly don't remember 'labels' being a thing and certainly don't remember anyone being bullied for what they were wearing. Neither of my daughters have ever been into labels and haven't been bullied for it either.
My brother put a tracking thing on his daughter's phone when she was 13/14 because she kept skipping school and lying about where she went. She found out after my brother tracked her down one day. It took years before their relationship recovered and he's regretted doing that ever since.
