Default What do you think of the Australian accent?

I've seen there are some old Australian movies on TV today and can't help but notice the Australian accent of decades past seems a lot broader.

What do you think of the Australian accent? Do you think it has changed?

Generally the accent is fine, it can be quite grating and I hate how many women go up at the end of words.

If you really want to hear how much the language and accent has changed, have a look at "Their A Wierd Mob". Amazing how the language has changed since the inclusion of so much "Americanism" and multi-cultural diversity into it.

US accent is changing. Watch old films from the 50s and 60s and they sound much more English. It's getting much more broad and slangy now. Aussie accent - well, which one? There's the edumacated one which is quite pleasant, then there's the Greater Bogan one which is... not.

The only Australian accent that annoys me is Julia Gillard's!!!!!!

If you clamped your hand over her mouth she would still be able to talk out of her nose!

It may have been broader, but you'll also notice that amongst the 'higher classes', that many Australians were also quite 'posh'. I've seen movies and people from the 70s etc who are really quite so.

Like Estuary English in the UK south, there has probably been a sort of mass accent arriving in the Australian burbs.

Great movie that one...... One of the best time capsuals I've seen I've seen Loved the bar scenes they looked like they were totally authentic. Malcolm was another good one from the early 70's

I really love the ABC type Australian accent especially on women.... not to enamoured with the bogan one though.

What really annoys me is listening to a American in a film try to an Aussie accent. On the other hand, the best British actor to do an accent was Richard Harris in "The Guns of Navarone".

Not bad for an Irishman.

Actors can train themselves to do different accents for whichever role they happen to be playing at the time. Nicole Kidman, for example, has done Irish and American accents amongst others.
