Our son Josh had a leaving party and we made it clear to everyone that he was getting on a plane and emigrating in five days, so if you do buy him a present, make it small. Despite that - someone bought him a pogo stick. 
But seriously - they're just has happy with small presents as big ones. I mean, let's face it - most four year olds spend more time play cubbies in the box the present came in.

Put all the small gifts into one huge box and wrap it up.
He'll play for hours in the box!

I would suggest some lightweight children's books as they're ridiculously expensive here.
You can easily pop them in the bottom of your luggage and take some on the 'plane to help keep them entertained.

You could also buy some summer clothes now & keep to give as Christmas presents! You are going to need to take those anyway!

I secretley think my 8 year old will get a bit of enjoyment out of it too.
Just remembered, he will be 9 by then bless him....where does time go???

True, but dont normally do clothes as Christmas pressies, but a few trendy things will go down well with my 8 year old by then maybe.

My eldest is 11 and still loves playing with boxes
Got a dishwasher last week and they were both arguing over the box
