The ones about sending international students to their homeland for 2 years before they will be able to apply for PR?

With an election coming up within 12 months, I'd guess it's just the usual pre-election posturing to galvanise the voting public from a little known backbencher. The legislation has got nothing to do with international students persay, but the schools re-registering under stricter criteria.
I think it is just his opinion, but then again, why say it at all without it being cleared by the ALP Caucus.
Maybe he just wants the people in his electorate seeing that he is "actually doing something" (phrase used loosely).

Whoever wrote his argument for him should actually attend some form of logical thinking course. After which, no doubt they could then cringe at ever having authored such a pile of tripe and denounce it as temporary insanity or IQ loss.

Agreed. Education is on of Australia's biggest earners.

Also agree but I don't think that getting educated/skilled here should lead to PR - although I know some on here have done this.

If those skills are in demand I don't see the problem. Same as any other migrant.

I agree, once the minimum work experience has been reached. Should be just the same as for offshore PR applicants although at the moment I'm not sure if it is.

That's the way it is, you don't automatically get PR as a foreign student.

That's true. The only way for students to be able to apply for PR directly without gaining work experience is to have excellent English and nominate an 60 points occupation.

Not such a good bargain if it means granting thousands with little or no prospect of genuinely skilled employment (despite an Australian qualification) lifetime access to Australia's healthcare and social welfare services.

Australia would be better off without this kind of "revenue".

Well, that's why the Skilled-Graduate temporary visa was implemented, right? The students will get their PR only if they managed to work in their nominated occupation for one year... and I believe most won't be able to do that.
