Default What age to give MMR?

Not wanting to start a debate........but here's our situation.........

First son had single vaccines back in UK as they were available; we could afford them; and it was no problem for me to drive him up from Dorset to London and back 3 times.

Now we are here in Oz with son number two (born here) who has just turned 1. I've had a reminder from the GP stuck on the fridge now for 4 weeks saying son #2 needs his MMR at 1 year old.

But, a friend of mine said I should wait until 18 months as by that time any signs of autism would be apparent? Is this right?

We won't 'not' vaccinate him as I think this is pretty irresponsible, but I'd like to know if anyone else has heard that there are benefits waiting for 6 months?

Cheers all

Indie didn;t have his until after 18 months, partly because i'd been told that the "bigger"they are the better and partly because he was getting 1 cold after the other and i didn't want him done when he was under the weather. I child that was at school with my eldest in England didn;t develop it until he was 5, just after his pre school jabs, this to his parents proved a direct link to MMR and made me very wary. After reading up we decided not to give the boys the booster but they have all had the first one. The booster aparantly doesn't top up their cover, it covers an extra 3% for whom the original vacination may not have worked on, meaning that if you had the first and it worked then you are in effect getting a double dose, which to me can;t be very good for a little body.

Sorry thats absolutely no help to what you have asked, sorry.....

I personally would get him done if the doctors say. As you say, you will get him done, so why not now. In my opinion and it is only that, MMR has no connection with Autism except the general time it's given is the general time that autism shows itself.

If your little one comes in contact with someone who has any of the diseases between now and 18 months it would be terrible. Both my girls had the MMR and suffered no ill effects at all, some get a bit ill but at the end of the day, it can only be your decision because everyone gets very emotional about the subject and I think you will end up even more confused.

Make an appointment with your doctor, explain your concerns and ask his advice before having it done.

I have big concerns over MMR so left it until they were 4 - then their speech, gross and fine motorskills are developed.
This is my OWN perception of link between MMR and Autism.
However it has been proven and challenged so it is entirely your choice.
Good luck with your decision

I still don't buy it, and were I going to have more children I would still give them the MMR when recommended.

personnal I have no concerns re giving MMR at 1yr - our daughter had hers at 13.5mths as she was not well around the 12mth mark. Another point to consider is that another jab is due at 18mths in Oz, which is the stage we are at now - don't know if there is any conflict have MMR & this next jab so close together, you will have to ask your doctor

That report states that the measles virus was found in the autistic kids - surely if they had been given the single measles vaccine this could still have occured if they were susceptible to it? Both my kids were given the MMR at 15 months which was the recommended age where we lived in the uk. Thankfully they have had no problems whatsoever with this.

The MMR vaccine must be the most tested vaccine in history, I personally think it's much safer to be vaccinated than not.

iPom is an unknown quantity at this point

My son is 3 and a half. So far he hasn't had it because he had viral meningitis a while back. It clobbered the poor little guy and doctors advised us to hold off with his immunisations so that we could see if there was any long term damage both from his birth (very bad one) or the meningitis.

He's going to start pre school soon so I have reservations about the MMR not being given at this point.

Having the booster is pointless. If it didn't work the first time, the booster won't help. This comes from an NHS director friend of mine who specialises in public health.
