I remember watching the Transatlantic Trophy with Randy Mamola in particular and all the other big names as well as a few national and clubmans races. I have a great photo somewhere of Jock Stein and passenger hanging off their sidecar as it went upside as it came towards us.

I think Rolf grew up on the Swan River. Went on a wine cruise earlier this year and the guides kept referring to him. I'll check again when I try the cruise again a few weeks. ;)

Yes he's known as the Boy from Bassendean. Quite right!

Drive-ins!!!!!!!!

Oh wow they were good value. Used to get a cartoony thing and two movies. Mum and dad used to lay the back seat down and make us lie really really still under a blanket so they didn't have to pay for us. Lying in the back of the car (Station wagon aka Estate) with pillows and blankets. All jumping around in the warmth of summer evenings.

Obviously this was in Oz.

Got so nostalgic reading this thread yesterday that I flicked to VH1 Classics last night just to wallow in it again! What about the music?:

The Police
The Jam
The Beat (that little guy with wobbly legs always made me laugh)
The great Madness (baggy trousers!)
Blondie (.....I'll be back in a min - just off to the loo!)
Pretenders
Bad Manners (lip up fatty, ah lip up fatty, fatty reggae!!)

then of course onto my era with:

Depeche Mode (saw them twice - once in 1981 and again in 1994)
The Human League
Yazoo (saw them in 82 - Alison Moyet was just out of this world)
Tears for Fears (saw in 82)
Ultravox (oooooooo Vienna! - saw in 86)
China Crisis (going a bit deep here)
Soft Cell (no comment)
Echo and the Bunnymen
The Cure
Spandau Ballet
Wham! (Wham bam....I am...a man....job or nooo job......)
Duran Duran (still good)
ABC (shoot that poison arrow to my heeaaart!, shoot that poison arrow..)

god, I used to have all the clobber too - pleated trousers with 25 pleats in, Cavalry shirts, pointed shoes and a flick haircut

Then what about all the NAFF stuff

Bros
Dollar
Captain bloody sensible
Joe Dolce (kept Vienna off the No 1 slot!)
Kool and the Gang

Re: Are we lucky to be alive........?!

Craig,

Wow this lot takes me back!! I used to love all the groups you mention in the second list!

Ive just been out and when I got in the car I turned on the radio Tpau were playing 'China in Your Hand'. It was no1 in 1987. I loved that group (at the time!) and I thought I would add it to the list. I remember I used to have big, curly hair (again at the time!) like the the lead singer, Carol Decker!!!

Going back.......back.......back a bit more I used to love Wham!! Had the t-shirt too! ;) Flippen heck your second list I cant beleive it I remember them all!! China Crisis I know the name but what did they sing? Alison Moyet in Yazoo had a fantastic voice. Ultravox, wow I thought Midge Ure was gorgeus!! Wow Duran Duran, my fav was John Taylor!!! Echo and the Bunnymen did they sing Echoe Beach?? The song is in my head now! (Echoe beach, far-away-in-time, echoe beach faraway-in time........) I liked that one!

ABC had a fantastic album, all the songs were brill!

Who remembers Adam and the Ants??!!!!!!! OMG I liked them as well! Prince Charmin!! LOL Stand and Deliver!!! LOL!!

I didnt get many clothes as a teenager (had my sisters hand-me-downs ) but I can remember skin tight jeans (I was stick-thin back then anyway) my hair was like the girls who sang in Human League, got my sister to cut it for me!! No she isnt/wasnt a hairdresser so you can imagine that!! And I thought I looked fantastic!! :D

Thanks for the memories!!!

Cheeky
PS BTW (Desperately trying to redeem myself!!) The music I like at the mo.....fav is Keene, also like Dido, Natasha Bedingfield, the Darkness, Stereophonics and of course Robbie Williams!! I hope my taste in music has improved with age! Crowded House were brill too (still listen to their stuff) but are no longer around....
And I have enough money to buy my own clothes now and my hairdresser is one of my bestest friends! (no not my sister!!) :D

Dexies - Gino, they would play it all the time at our local youth club - while we used to play the original space invaders (like in arcade). Also OMD - Enolagay was played over and over till we were sick of it.

Have been to a club up Birmingham recently that is all 80's - everybody danced all night (around their handbags, of course). It was great, we would have looked mental to most people screaming "OMG remember this - gotta dance" but everybody was the same. :D

(Maybe not!) I used to like Adam and the Ants too but wouldn't admit it because it just would NOT have been cool.

Embarrased now that I can't remember a chart China Crisis track - they were around early Eighties up to the mid-80s but only had a couple of chart tracks. What about OMD (Enola Gay was my fave)

Sel,

OMG YES!!!! bangles, forgot about those (Im laughing my head off here!!) I got mine off the market they were something like 10 for 50p......silver ones!!!!! The more bangles you had the more 'popular' you were!! I had 10!!!!

Another thing I can remember was when I was 15 I decided I didnt like being brunette anymore so I dyed my hair blonde........it turned out RED!!! My mum nearly killed me and I had to go to school like that!! :o It soon grew out (after about 2 yrs!!)

Do you (or anyone) remember those 'shaders' and 'toners' semi shade colours for your hair....cost about 50p off the market??!! Can anyone remember the shade range??!! You washed them in and then they washed out after about 6 washes. OMG I went through quite a few packets of those, anything other than having boring brown hair!!!!! (The above paragraph was what I progressed to after these!!)

Oh for the 80s!!! Ive had VH1 on tonight, just listened to Wham and Young Guns (George Micheal looks sooooo young!!) and ABC and Shoot that Poisen Arrow.....I was singing away while cooking tea!!! Feel like Im young again!!

Boy George....loved that hat!!!!! and the make up, tried to copy but my mum wouldnt let me out 'looking like that'!!!!!

I went to see tpau before they were famous and they were brill!! They were fantastic live, wonder what happened to em.

OMD were pretty good I didnt mind em. A track that sticks in my mind was about that french girl she got burned at the stake, grrrr, cant remember the name of it now!!
What was it called...help!! She was 17 and fought for her beliefs/religeon.
I will try and remember......

Our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pots & pans.
When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip-flops and fluorescent 'spokey dokey's' on our wheels.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags, riding in the passenger seat was a treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same.
We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.
We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this.
We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes.
After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded.
We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet chat rooms.
We had friends we went outside and found them.
We played Kerby and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cuts and broke bones but there were no law suits.
We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents
We played knock-and-run and were actually afraid of the owners catching us.
We walked to friend's homes. We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn't rely on mum or dad to drive us to school, which was just round the corner.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls.
We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law.

Now let's check if we're getting old... :D
1.. You understand what was written above and you smile.
2.. You need to sleep more, usually until the afternoon, after a night out.
3.. Your friends are getting married/already married.
4.. You are always surprised to see small children playing comfortably with computers.
5.. When you see teenagers with mobile phones, you shake your head.
6.. You remember watching Dirty Den in East Enders the first time around.
7.. You meet your friends from time to time, talking about the good old days, repeating again all the fun you had experienced together Hmmmmm.......

And the skateboard which was a square piece of wood with the weels of a roller skate nailed underneath ... instead of the smart plastic one from woolies at £9.95...and.......'double deckers' during the summer hols... playing knock down ginger......and runouts.... Im sure these games are the same all over but have regional names....anyone else know these?

great post ... touched a nerve with large number of us.
