Visiting Fraser Island?

We've got some rellies over who are keen to see it, I don't really know anything about it. Can anyone give advice on the best way to see it etc?

Is it worth it for a daytrip? We're in Maudsland so it's a drive up but we don't mind that.

We haven't done 4wd before but we could hire one

Any info much appreciated

I loved fraser island.
It's the worlds largest sand island and is well worth seeing. I think we stayed overnight at hervey bay but it was a while ago so could be wrong.
There was a stream on it that was so clear you could see the sand at the bottom - beautiful
We went on an organised trip as we were just passing through but there were plenty of people there doing it independently.

The easiest way to see it all is Google Earth:sneaky:
If your driving up from GC I'd make a weekend of it, hire a 4X4 & get tickets to go from River Heads to Fraser then exit at the bottom over to Inskip. You can do Rainbow Beach at the same time then;)

We have been a few times and you should be aware that there are no tarmac roads (except in Eurong). You need a good four wheel drive, a Rav4 or CRV won't do. Google "fraser island driving" for an idea.

Mike.

Forgot to mention, check the tide times. You can't get along the beach 2 hours either side of high tide.

I'm really keen to see Hervey Bay too, the owners of our rental are moving there.

Re: Visiting Fraser Island?

We were there last week.

We were staying on the Sunshine Coast and took an organised day trip with a tour company. To be honest I think a day trip is a bit too frenetic and I would probably take a two day trip.

The driver of our tour noted that the heavy rains had made some of the tracks that they normally use impassable and over the course of the trip the going was extremely heavy. Most of the 4x4's inland were Landcruisers and I would suggest that unless you have some experience that you don't make this your first trip in a 4x4.

Beautiful Island though and well worth a visit.

Going there this weekend (Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach), takes about 3/4 hours. Will try and get over to FI if we can.

Takes 2 hours to Gympie then if you head North to Hervey Bay it's another hour & a half if you head East to Rainbow Beach it's an hour.
I'm going at the weekend it takes me half an hour through the forestry tracks hauling the boat;)
If it's not to windy we may get a dive or two in:thumbup:

Take an organised 4WD tour - I wouldn't do Fraser for first experience of 4WD'ing - or maybe try Moreton, very beautiful, closer and smaller so much more doable for a day trip. You should be able to do Moreton in most 4WD's - the worst bit is getting off the MiCat (runs from Fishermans Island) as it gets pretty churned up there - try the Combie Trader if it's still running (from Scarborough) - I know they're stoppping it soon so not sure if that's still possible.
