We've been a few times if you want to take trips out of the city the floating markets and woodcarvers one is a good day trip, as is the River Kwai and the forces graves trip. We visited a huge national park can't remember the name but got to ride on an elephant and had a ride on an ox cart. All the trips were quite cheap when we were earning pounds I think about 20 quid each and all came with a nice Thai lunch.
Closer to the city buy a ticket for the sky train and go to the markets I think you can buy a weekly ticket and use it as often as you like. It'll give you access to get to the river and do the tour up and down the river just buy a ticket for the ferry and stay on it. The great palace is worth a visit as are the many gardens. Most of the hotels have a large selection of tourist attractions pamphlets some have a dedicated booking desk for day trips.
If your into cheap techie stuff cameras vids phones lap tops visit the Pantip Plaza it's 5 floors of wall to wall tech stuff. Oh and the guys on the ground floor will burn you all the latest DVD's for a couple of quid. We bought about 30 last time and not one was a dud. Great for updating the kids old Disney vids to DVD.
For an excellent meal try Cabbages and Condoms restaurant or the Fish Market
