Two-up

Bloke just been in my shop, nice chap - star tats, "love Aus or ***** off" singlet, stinking of alcohol - asking for 'Two-up' coins. On asking WTF they were I was met with a torrent of abuse which in summery was "You dont know what Two-up is? Every Aussie knows that on Anzac day it is legal to play Two-up in Rsl's etc from midday"
So be warned - if any feral Aussie mentions Two-up nod your head knowingly..

Here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-up is some info!

Re: Two-up

I thought you could only get them in RSLs on the day so as to prevent anyone playing it any other time. Livened up the day anyway, I guess :D

Apparently we sold said coins - which was news to me! But yes, the tables and coins are set up in most Rsl's on Anzac day.

Every aussie does know what two-up is and you don't have to be feral. My kids have been playing it with our two up coins since they were toddlers. Even took it to for the Australian display at school in International Day in Dubai. My Great Uncle had the Two-up in Kalgoorlie before it because legal - it was a big family secret (used to have a plumbers sign outside his house and I used to hear the family goss about it being the cover up for his illegal enterprise - I actually thought it was to do with the girls on Hay Street for years).

Indeed. You learn it at school. I thought it was common knowledge these days, but apparently the immigrants are still learning.

I knew what two-up was before I came.

Just learnt that it's best played with old pennies.

Touristy shops sell a bit of wood with two old pennies, I remember giving a set to my nephew years ago, just the sort of game he liked. The guy I was with at the time told me then it was legal to play it on Anzac Day - he reckoned thats cos all the pubs were shut and there was nothing else to do
