Warning on the BOM site

http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ20003.txt

Based on the magnitude and location of the earthquake,
tsunami could start affecting these locations at the following local
time:

Cooktown from 0931am 02/04/2007
Cairns from 0949am
Brisbane 1033am
Gladstone 1139am
Mackay 1144am

This bulletin is also available through TV and Radio
broadcasts and the Bureau's website at
www.bom.gov.au/tsunami/

Dangerous waves and currents may affect beaches, harbours and rivers for several
hours from the time of impact and low- lying coastal areas could be flooded.

The waves can be separated in time by between ten to sixty minutes and the first
wave of the series may not be the largest.

The Queensland State Emergency Service advises that people should stay away from
low lying coastal areas.

This warning will be updated by this morning.

This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's
website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218

The Bureau of Meteorology and Emergency Management Queensland would appreciate
this warning being broadcast regularly.

Re: Tsunami?

Well now it's all over and thankfully nothing happened, can someone clever explain why it would hit me after hitting Cairns but before Mackay. I don't understand. If I drop something in water the ripples spread out, they don't miss bits out and then go back to them

Am I being thick

Answers on a postcard please.

Re: Tsunami?

Last I heard was that the wave would possibly reach 15cms but that they were going to close all QLD beaches just in case  I drove past my beach about 20 minutes later and there were still people surfing and generally doing beach type stuff. I think it's the laid back Aussie attitude ;)

It's just arse covering after what happened after the boxing day Tsunami.

Now if anyone drops something heavy in NZ a Tsunami warning is issued.

It was largely butt covering I think, but at the same time it was a big quake, and since the Boxing Day one the idea is 'better safe than sorry'.
I can do without that sort of start to a Monday morning though.....can I have my breakfast now!
