This term, the coalition leadership is a poisoned chalice anyway. What is really relevant is who follows Abbott when they lose next year.

I also hope for a middle of the road leader, but I'm not well up on Tory politics and their MPs.

I like him. I work with someone who knows him (albeit not very well) and reckons that he is a genuine, down to earth, friendly guy. Might be an act but I like those qualities in a politician.

Joe is the Liberal version of Latham.

I reckon it'll take at least 2 terms before the Beasleys of the Liberal party move out the way and let someone through who looks like they could become a PM.

My prediction is that the next Liberal win will be 2019 under the leadership of the current member for Flinders (although he'll have to harden up a bit).

As much as I hate it, I have to agree with you. The socialists are in for the long haul.

how did you come to that conclusion? As much as I think the current Liberal bunch are vermin I would not wish that type of comparison on any of them, certainly not Hockey.
Latham was a thug

Just a feeling that I have. I'll admit that he's not a thug like Latham but his attempts to be an everyman for everyone feels familiar.

Wholeheartedly agree. I was mystified why Turnbull rushed to pull the trigger so early on Nelson; impatience and ambition are a bad combination.

It looks like it's going to take a second or even third defeat before the Liberals start to get serious about electability again. The present fractious rabble bears no resemblance to a government-in-waiting.

It was common knowledge that Brendon Nelson was in reality only a caretaker leader since the resignation of Howard. It was just a matter of time before Turnbull took over. The Lib/NP Opposition is in a similar position to the ALP following the defeat in the 1975 election, when Bill Hayden took over as leader (and after Keating lost in the early '90s). It was common knowledge in the media that Hawke wanted the leader's job, that is why he was fast-tracked from ACTU President into the federal arena.
