You'll find the same inconsiderate people on the public transport system here I'm afraid. I quite often am confronted with trains that are filled to the doors...and when you cant get on and it pulls away you see the empty space in the aisle in the middle of the carriage where people just refuse to move down. I even had a girl shove me out of the train as the doors were closing one time a few weeks back...I thought that was kinda funny actually! |

Good post.
I've heard alot about parts of NW and SE London and am almost ashamed to admit I've barely been to those parts. It really is a melting pot. My experience of London N/NW was Hampstead, of all places, for crying out loud. And I knew the City, and WC1, and SW1. Where I was brought up there was elements of roughness but it was more around money (too much given to people who couldn't handle it on the fringes) - or bad behaviour in certain spots ie clubs or shopping towns. Infact exactly like any Australian city. My immediate circle would obviously be some 40 odd square miles.. But it was still really very WASP. That said, it was still busy...which someone might miss in an Australian suburb. Most of my life experiences came from elsewhere but I will not document these here. I hope to pass on some of these lessons to my kids as the need arises as they are brought up here in relative shelter. "OK Son, this is how a knife goes in... [Don't tell your mother I told you this]." |
Re: Tired of London, Tired of Life
Living in Islington for 6 years prior to leaving the UK I have to say I just couldn't take the crowds, the relentless billboard ads, spewy pavements, litter, road rage and the crap transport system anymore. Getting my house burgled by chav kids every month was a delight as well - then accompanied by the ensuing debacle with Islington council as I wanted to put bars on the windows of my grade 2 listed gaff. I miss London now I live in NQ - to be fair I'd probably miss Beirut - but I wouldn't want to return to the economic treadmill and there's no way I'd return and not be on at least 75-80k - Central London on much less than that isn't doable... Cairo's the frenetic city for me. Bored of of the massive onslaught on the senses of the markets, spices, hustle and bustle, relentless scams, architecture then I'd be tired of life...

Hopefully you find a better commute in Sydney then. I got around on the trains there for 5 months or so and don't remember a whole lot of pleasantries being exchanged (none in fact). Plenty of pushing and shoving and huffing and puffing trying to get on a train at Town Hall station...I don't blame people for being a bit less than cheery when it's 35C & 208% humidity down there (or so it felt anyway!). Most people, like London, just want to mind their own business.

We did travel to and from Sydney at rush hour a number of times to see what it was like and we never felt it was as bad as London...but we might just have been lucky, or on the least busy line. I'm sure I come across as a right old grump..honestly, I'm really quite cheery and I do try and not give in to the dourness of London. But I'm in countdown mode now so everything seems to be worse than usual coz we just want to get the hell out of here haha! Tx |

Re: Tired of London, Tired of Life
i have no problems with commuting on sydney trains in general, maybe because our line is not that busy. the people are nice if you smile at them etc but there are nevertheless a few weirdos who are antisocial.
i sometimes eye-flirt (or eye-f**k as my friend described it) with cutie guys hahaha. watch out for the gay sydney commuter. |
