I agree to a point, but the problem is that at this moment in time, there is no non lethal force option available to the police, that is nearly as reliable as a firearm. Hopefully the day will come when this is not the case, but who knows when that will be
And for the record, there is no such thing as a non lethal weapon, only less lethal.

in some situations, yes. The Daily Mail will find enough outrage material as it is...

Of course, a lot of British Police are armed...you could argue that weapons are slowly being brought in. I don't see a political or cultural issue - it's been cute, but as Zulu has said, liberal and tolerant nations arm their police.

it's interesting that police don't want weapons: this strikes me that a level of expectation was set: naturally a sea change would be culturally significant.

if you decided that all new police entrants were trained and armed I don't think you would see a drop in recruitment.

An inflatable banana. Those things are very annoying when someones belting you with it. But it won't kill you. Atleast not without actually trying to kill you.

Last year 67 cops in the US were killed by gunfire. 5 were killed by accidental gunfire (eg the police shot themselves).

Given the very low level of deaths by gunfire in the UK, I'd suggest you are better off getting guns out of society entirely. And that's before you get to the people murdered by police gunfire over the same period, and the reality that you can't trust a cop with any kind of weapon.

Time to get rid of more guns, both in the wider society, and in police hands.

So how many people have been "murdered" by police gunfire over this period? and what would you suggest the police use when dealing violent/ armed offender..................a nasty look, or a cutting comment?

More lethal so I'd say no. The banana adds a more friendly look, appeals to kids and allows any football fan to fight back fairly if they get abused by police. Actually, that image makes me chuckle.

basic fact is that it's:
Good guys 0 Bad guys 2

If these 2 officers had been armed it might have been:
Good guys 1 Bad guys 1

Only 1 in it but a big difference

Yes, but if the football fans get their hands on them, it will only lead to calls for the police to be armed with foam filled replica fruit items......so the arms race continues

Thats the beauty of it. Football fans already have them so you're fighting banana with banana.
