L REMEMBER a few years ago there was some poor woman in Queensland who had both her arms and a leg bitten off by a pack of tiger or bull sharks l think she made it back to shore but died from blood loss.

It was not far from us, and one thing that was mentioned in the local paper was that the local fishermen throw their fish scraps into the water, unwittingly attracting the sharks. |

That was in 2006 and was quoted as "It is the first fatality on a Shark Safety Program protected beach in Queensland in 44 years."

They were Bulls not Tigers and that girl did everything they suggest you shouldn't (ie: swim alone at dusk or dawn, near an estuary and after it had been raining) |

I think of her every time there's a shark attack. Her parents sent her off on a church camp where they assumed she'd be safe and she died on a beach without them ever getting to say goodbye. That one really got to me.

21-year-old holiday maker Sarah Whiley.
She was swimming with three other friends. It was a hazy summer afternoon . The young woman was in chest-high water . It was a shark protected beach, but locals say that the Amity Point Beach was probably not a wise place to swim late in the afternoon. ANNA BLIGH: it is a timely reminder that our shark safety measures are not fool-proof. http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2006/s1544350.htm |

Yes, as soon as they said Amity Point I thought of Amityville.
