Default which telescope?

We went to the Gin Gin Observatory the other night for their star gazers evening. It cost $29 per adult and $84 for a family ticket. It was worth the money, we were there from 8.30 til 11pm and were shown the major constellations etc. Am now able to identify quite a few of them
Am thinking of buying a telescope and wondered if anyone could recommend one or a site that will give me an idea of which one to buy. Don't want to go too mad (we're not talking the Hubble ) but don't want to buy a crap one either.

Do you want a general purpose telescope (suitable for birdwatching etc.) or a specialist stargazing one?

My friends bought one from the Australian Geographic shop at Whitfords. It is an amazing thing but it did cost them close to $1000.

Must admit, although it seems a tad pervy, i love the sky .. full stop

Clouds amaze me.
Stars amaze me.

and being in Australia, where if you are lucky enough like we are to live where there is no light pollution.. the milkyway just leaves you gobsmacked.

The red moon a cpl of months ago, was just bloody awesome.
