There are 3 reg keys relevant to this problems. Do a regedit and make sure that you have all 3, somehow the update deleted one of them on my computer.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Interface\{0000010E-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\NumMethods

SHOULD BE: unnamed Value of type REG_SZ which is set to 12.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Interface\{0000010E-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid

SHOULD BE: unnamed Value of type REG_SZ which is set to {0000030C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Interface\{0000010E-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid32

SHOULD BE: unnamed Value of type REG_SZ which is set to {00000320-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

Reboot and you should be good to go.

Here's the link to the website I found
http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.c...=692319&page=1

If its not the registry keys, there are a few more ideas there on the webpage. See how you go with these.

Thanks appreciate the help but...

1. my laptop was doing it before restore so restore didn't cause the fault

2. I can get into regidit but there are hundreds under those headings and I have no idea where to look

Hi Fraser,
From what I read, it's more to do with updates installed or downloaded than restoring.
For the regedit, look for the HKEY bit at the start and then click on it and it will expand, scroll down to the interface folder and expand that, and then scroll down to the 0000010E folder - make sure you count the zeros as the ones at the start are 6 zeros and you want 5 zeros. The you can just click on the 2 folders and make sure the info is correct.
Hope that helps. Just done it myself in 3 minutes so you should be able to check it quickly.

There are two folders in there I click on the first one called num methods and inside is REG_SZ which is set to 12.

I click on the second which is ProxyStubClsid32 and get {00000320-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

But not the middle one on your list

Hi Frazer,
It could be that it was deleted. Try adding a folder ProxyStubClsid and then add the key that is listed.
Let me know how you go

All three folders are there.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{0000010e-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\NumMethods

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{0000010e-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{0000010e-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid32

with the relevent numbers and still doesn't work

Are the last two supposed to be in different folders as I now have three in there or are the last two supposed to be two string values in the same folder?

Oh well, worth a try.
Read the thread that I put in the first mail today as they all seem to have the same problems as you. Maybe register with them and post the problem there?
Sorry couldn't help - seems like Gatesy's got another thing to answer for!

Hi Fraser,
I honestly think its a software glitch because of the task manager thing and a few of the other problems. Best thing to do is hit the offie, get some beer and then scroll through some of these tech forums. The solution is there and it will probably hit you after the first or second six pack. It's just going to take patience (and a lot of alcohol!)
Best of luck - at least if you don't find the solution, you can turn around and say, at least I'm not the only one who's got the problem.
Just a thought - when was the last time you did a windows update? or checked for patches?

I've tried everything on that list and nothing, the only thing I haven't tried is a new mouse but it's a laptop and the touchpad doesn't move anything either even with the mouse unplugged

Thanks anyway Sean
