The Suitcase Thread

Hi all,

I am in the non too dubious position of having the shippers arrive in 5 days!!!! :scared:

I feel I haven't done enough and I am stressing about what needs to go in the suitcase as opposed to the container.

"'Ang on a mo" I thought..............I know some people who can help!!!!

So esteemed members of BE, I ask for your pearls of wisdom on this matter - - -what do you wish you'd stuffed in the case?

Likewise.........what are you glad you stuffed in the case? :D

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rach

On hindsight we now know that we put too much in our suitcases!!!! We did however bring one of the small PS2 in our hand luggage with a few games (out of their covers and into a small cd holder) so that the kids had something to do in the serviced appts and in the rental before our stuff arrived. We did send our stuff over 6 wks before we left the country and only had a three week wait for it this side. It really does depend on how long you're going to be without all your stuff. A few knick nacks as previously said, photos etc will make your rental feel a bit more homely. Just try not to fall into the trap of taking too much as you'll only have to lug it around with you (ie to service appt and then onto rental). Just make sure you bring loads of coat hangers in your container with you as they do not give them away free over here with the clothes and they can be pricey!!!! Good luck.

Hi there,

we are still living out of suitcases, but sold most of our stuff before we came. We are in a fully furnished rental but one thing we did bring that has been invaluable was our I-Pod and I-Pod sound dock. We've been able to listen to "our music" since we arrived without waiting for CDs etc (we are not going to buy a stereo now, the sound dock does all our music).

I wish I brought a few more jumpers as we've all bought quite a few items of winter clothing since we got here.

Bottle opener and cork screw.
Kitchen implements that you like, such as serving spoons and basic cutlery so you don't have to raid IKEA as soon as you're here.
Bring some toys for children
DVD's
Really good fleece tops
Pair of warm gloves if you're out early walking - it's a bit nippy.
Paperwork esp proof of no claims discount (as I forgot ours and it has caused us real hassle)

Don't bother about shampoo as you can get all brands here.
A couple of large favourite mugs and your favourite coffee (some brands of coffee are tricky to find here) We bought 3 BIG jars of 3065 Cafe Direct with us. :o

There is another thread which might help you so I'll go and have a look for it.

It might be kinda boring but we also brought paperwork with us - just some bank statements and the like - for ID and in case we needed them to show we had finance (hadnt moved all the money over at that point). We also brought ipod and laptop with us. We had 40kg each luggage so we could afford to put a few more things in it. What messed us up was two weeks in Scotland (in Winter) between shippers and flying - so half our luggage was winter woolies!

Great thread !

Could I just ask aswell - we have loads , loads, of family photo's - if we ship them in the container, will the humidity spoil them?

You'd probably put this in anyway but I'd say a few good new books ... apparently books are relatively expensive out there and until you find a good source it might be handy to have you're own supply, especially if you get like us on our reccie trip - we woke about 1am for first few days, awake for an hour or two and then actually got a bit more sleep before getting up at 6am ... even more important if travelling with kids, wouldn't want to risk putting telly on and waking them up!

Oh but raiding IKEA is so much more fun :D

Most of the others have given you the right idea. Dont forget to pack your jewelery and anything else you dont want to be on a boat for 2 months (small things that is ;) )
