An American girl I work with has a very odd name- Brandi.
Her surname makes her sound like a stripper but she is reasonably senior in IT- won't mention it just in case!!!

My daughter would LOVE that! She is Rapunzel mad. I even had to make her 'Rapunzel hair' out of a stretchy hairband and yellow wool! She loves it so much she keeps it on her bed when she goes to sleep.

I was teaching in a Catholic school in the UK when Hong Kong was returned to China and we received quite an influx of children during this time. One stands out. He didn't want to Anglicise his name, preferring to keep his Chinese name. Not a problem, you think. Except his first name was Kawpat. Pronounced Cowpat. No word of a lie!

Managed to persuade him to shorten it to Pat!

At the same school I also had a Gertrude in my form. Shortened to Trudy fortunately!!!!

I also have a female friend whose middle names are Roger Houston and another with the middle name Scott. Also a female.

And I am named after my father. I am a girl!!!! I shortened that pretty darned quickly!!!

There are a lot more Indias here than in the UK - though none seem to be spelt the same as my daugther -- I N D I A. I was glad at her last kinder that they had a board up with all the kids' names on

Oh, and we had a student at Bristol Uni called Isa Sambo.
The problem with names like Misty and Sunny (and others like Autumn and Summer) are that they are quite cute kids names but tend to be porn star names for adults.

Friends of ours named their daughter Kryssi Celine. While Kryssi is adorable for a 4 year old it's hardly a grown woman's name.

Really why should it matter what other people call their children. It would be a bit boring if everyone were called Harry, Rory, Charlotte and Abbie. My kids have different names and I'm always getting told how beautiful they are.

Just because the names in Australia are different to what you're used to, doesn't mean they're "strange". My kids go to school in Dubai with kids with very different names than they did in Australia, don't get a whole lot of Mohamed's, Achmed's and Fatima's at home, but middle eastern names are not strange, because we're in the middle east.

I wonder how many of you actually realised Australia is not the UK when you moved there because some of you seem to find so much about it "strange".

I really think it is cruel to impose a silly name on a child. Why not give a child the real name, eg Christine, and then call them Chrissy in the family.

If you give a child a babyish name, they are stuck with it in adulthood, and may well choose to have it changed.

No, I cannot get beyond thinking that weird names are the result of self indulgent parents who give no thought to their child's wellbeing.

What a load of shite just because a parent calls there child an usual name is nothing to do with there wellbeing at all

I think kids are used to hearing different names, some i dont like personally but each to there own.

what would you class a babyish name?

So you don't think a "Cedric" or a "Bartholomew" is going to get bullied at school because of his name? We're not saying it's right that he should be, but it's a reality and I think certain people on here are saying that the parents have a social responsibility to their kids in this way. Why potentially put your kids through mental anguish at such a young age?
