For years after I left 'home' I refered to my parent's house as 'home'. I was very settled in my house and it was indeed where my heart was but I think the slip of the tongue was because that was where I had spent the last 18 years of my life and had been happy there. I dont think that because people use emotive language to describe where they were raised and mostlikely where their family is means that they see the place where they are now as any less like home.

Live and let live language police !!!

Please, pleaseplease - those who live here in Oz - STOP calling the UK HOME!!!!

I just seen quite a few threads with "Back Home" in the text.

I dunno if it is a psychological trick but when we moved here we instantly stopped calling the UK home. Not as though we have forgotten our roots roots.

Home is where your heart is /hang yer hat/keep yer herd of Bedlington Terriers.:curse::curse::curse:
Thats why some people call the UK home.

Interesting...........

My rant stems from overheard conversations in the supermarkets and even last night in the pub.All quite whingey (sp?) conversations.Last night I had to move away from a group ,I just overloaded on these conversations. They make me cringe. We have tried very hard to settle here.Whatever it takes - and it's paid off.No denial, this country gave us an opportunity and we took it,with gratitude to her.

It has been a "trick" I suppose to call here home.

I've been back to the UK twice now and it felt like Deja Vu - but I certainly felt as if the country had changed after 7 years - or perhaps passed me by or perhaps I've changed?

Sorry if I really offended anyone but this is the Barbie and those are my thoughts.

you haven't offended me and open debate is great I tell you

I'm still in rainy lancs at the moment and would give anything to be in Oz and knowing the sort of person who I am cannot personally imagine there will be much I miss about here

However will I still refer to it as home? Perhaps. Doesn't mean I want to be here and doubt I'll even come back to visit once I have gone. My family is scattered all over the world, my brother hasnt been to the UK for bout 8 years as within bout 5 mins he is wishing he was back 'abroad' and crying into his duty free. He still refers to it as home though.

I think for lots of people it is a case of the grass will always be greener...

I'm glad you are so settled where you are and think I will be the same. I hope so anyway!

Well, I've got to agree 100% with Fraser on this one. Whether whinging or not, it's everyone's right to call the UK whatever they want and if you don't like it then that's your problem. No one gets a visa which says you must wholly embrace Australia and never refer to your homeland as home again!!! I suspect you're more annoyed at the whinging than the use of the word home though.

I try not to call the UK home, but sometimes it just slips in there. At the end of the day, most of my family are in the UK and I've 37 years of history there - can't I have 2 homes?

Of course you can, I have tried Oz and it was not for me, but if I had liked it home would always where I was born.

Sorry, but I've lived in three other places other than the Uk and it will always be "home". It's where I was born and grew up. My family and friends are there. I am comfortable when I return there. No effort involved. So much familiarity. That's because it's just "home".
If this is what you have to be annoyed at then your life is lacking in some....."life" I think.

And yet, like a few others before you, you were drawn back to a forum for people living in Australia. British 'winter' getting to you?

Plenty of "Life",in fact a little too much at times.

I suppose this thread can encompass a wide range of thoughts/situations regarding settling in Oz.

I did say in my original post that I'd never forget my roots.

I love the british seasons and have been in a few countries which all had their good points and bad points and enjoyed my time in all of them, I was not drawn to the Oz forum as I like to read all of the forums to see how people are getting on in the Countries I have lived in, I just prefer my life in Cotswolds to anywhere else I have ever lived. who knows I might be off to live in Southern ireland next....that is nice

*scratching head* Not sure what point you are trying to make there.. however..

Is it not a little unrealistic to spend 30 to 40yrs of your life within a society which raised you, formed your adult personality, you lived, worked, had family, socialised, made friends and have your entire life history within it, yet as soon as you up sticks and leave for another it is suddenly "home"??
I think it is more a case of trying to convince yourself you have done the right thing and part of the settling process. Nothng wrong with it if it works for you to deny your past, or attempt to delude yourself into a comfort zone because you need it. Good luck to you if it feels right.
For me, i feel it a betrayal of my history, my family still back there, and ME as a person. As someone else said, theres nothing wrong with having 2 homes and dumping and turning your back on the one that saw you through most of your life somehow doesnt seem right.
