Re: solar power
Sarnia, Ontario opened their 20MW solar farm last year in "sunny" Canada.

Re: solar power
Not if your system was 'making' enough electricity during the day to supply you with power for the evening too. As said previously, you would use that first before having to use any from the grid. The PV system we have gives us half of the electricity we use (we use a lot!) but I'm still happy that our bill has halved. Especially as the cost of electricity will only increase in the future.
I'm not very technical and don't know the total ins and out (only our experience) so I hope I make sense Sue .

So can you store what you dont use and use it in the evening?????

Re: solar power
You can't. Well not with a cheap residential system you can't. You need very expensive storage batteries to do it.

Re: solar power
There are 640 Acres to the Square mile. Nauru is 8.1 Sq miles of rock surrounded by deep sea.
So one third of the island would be covered in panels to generate power that only exists during daylight hours........
I think a large shed with 8 diesel engines is more palatable to the good burgers of Nauru....

Everything will go up cos of her,,,,,and she reckons the only big companies will pay ,does she think we are that stupid all they will do is pass the cost on to US
NO ONE will change my mind about her,,anyway back to solar power..lol..
So do I spend about $8k on 12 panels salesman says they will pay for themselves in 4 yrs ,as my overall electric is about $2000 a yr now and thats before anymore increases..
BUT im still not sure if i can use what i make later in the day ,im getting mixed answers on here...

SMA sunny boy 2500 inverter with 11 X 190w Conergy panels for $8600 - this is discounted by 1 X Recs /STC - you would qualify for 3 X Recs / STC.
Definitely hasten slowly with your decision , get at least 3 to 5 quotes - there is a vast difference in pricing.
Reiterate that you can,t store your surplus to use later.

anyway it was by way of example that very good panels have come down substantially , not a recommendation.
another example on lower pricing

Re: solar power
We have it installed but have had it for the last year and we qualify for the 66c feed in tariff (for 7 years) thank god. We pay our bill as we always have and then they pay our solar rebate directly into our bank account. We went for a 1.5kw sys which is 9 panels (all we could afford) and so far we have made back around $1500. Our last leccy bill was $520 (no gas just electric here) and we got a rebate of $320. Of course the days are shorter at the moment we get more in summer months. Glad we did it cause ours will have paid for itself in about 18months time. We did a lot of research and even though there were heaps of deals on we didnt go for the cheapest and paid just under $3500 after rebates.

Re: solar power
Well he led me to believe that the system would cover all my electric so it cost me $2000 a yr,( so 4yrs x $2000 ) and i think the system was about $8500 ,but now ive learnt i wont be able to store any so will still need to buy electric,,,,THIS is a hard 1 ,not only do you have to suss out the cowboys but how many panels you really need !!!

Re: solar power
Absolutely, my intention would be to at worst break even or at best make a profit.
that's because you are clearly looking at it for the wrong reasons. The fact that you talk about "profit" shows your intentions, rather than using greener means of energy production or even just saving on bills. The payback period may have increased with the reduction/removal of feed-in tariffs but what gets taken away there simply gets made up for from the increase in energy costs.

Re: solar power
I got mine (3kW) installed a few weeks ago and I got PFIT at 66c - in by the skin of my teeth - too. I had to pay more for an Italian invertor and I got Aussie panels - happy allround.
The PFIT was a big consideration.
Even under cloud and rain I still can get 800w (etc).
