Looked at flights today with Air Asia. flying from GC airport to KL was about $380 each way for an adult. we would then get an internal flight to Penang - used to be around $30 one way. IMO Malaysia is a lovely holiday destination - cheap, friendly and very welcoming!

That's not bad at all.

Would just have to figure out a place to stay.

If you go to Penang, there is a hotel in Georgetown built by the Sarkie brothers who built Raffles - the Eastern & Orient. IMHO it's not worth the expense; our room was lovely (fab bathroom!) but I found the pool, loungers, etc., to be quite shabby and the staff to be snotty - the Concierge spoke to my husband only and left me trailing 5 paces behind.

TBH we found Penang quite boring but maybe if you're not coming from Asia it will seem different. KL, on the other hand, I expected to hate - a dirty, unsafe version of Singapore - but actually found it very vibrant and fun. Just have to take reasonable precautions after dark.

If you're feeling adventurous (and I know nothing about flights from QLD) how about the Philippines? I haven't been, but friends rate Boracay.
