I bet you lot didn't know that speaking French with a Scottish accent makes you sound Flemish! The Flemish-speaking Belgians don't like it when one of their own speaks French at all, so a Scot speaking French in Belgium is likely to cop an earful, or get the cold shoulder. My BiL, from Edinburgh but living in France for many years, found this out at a Flemish bank. The teller refused to serve him when he heard him speak, tlll he saw his passport and realised....

Love of one's adopted country does, in no way, diminish one's love of one's native land.
Also, what about our English expat countrymen who emmigrate permanently throughout the world, only to rant about the Scots? It must be repressed envy, otherwise we would be ignored.
No further questions m'lud.

At a Mexican business reception, I found out later that they thought that I was a Spaniard, due to my apparent 'Castellano' accent, while in Belgium and France, I was credited with a 'Sorbonne' quality French accent.
Either way, speaking a native language of a country, allows for a much richer, in depth cultural experience, in my view.

Cool, but did you know most Latin Americans think people who speak Castillian Spanish sound like "maricons"?
