Stills are extremely rare in the US since the 1930's. I do not think anyone is trying to ban alcohol in Australia. Take a step back and consider the merits of an older drinking age. Setting a 21 year old drinking age in the US did nothing to increase any crime rate other than a minor attempting to buy:nod:
What are the merits as you see them? |

I can't see any merits in having a legal age of 21 instead of 18. First, there is no physiological or psychological difference between an 18 and a 21 year old, and second, no one pays the slightest bit of attention to the legal drinking age whatever it is.

Well on a serious note the drinking age is ingrained in the US. You will have to trust me on that. Waiting to 21 to drink has never hurt anyone. I can't speak for all but I certainly matured considerably between 18 and 21 As far as paying attention to the legal drinking age... in Australia perhaps not... In the US I have seen 60 year old men turned away from bars when they had no ID on them.
It's why I could never live permanently in the US. Britain is trying a half-hearted attempt at US-style ID culture but luckily it is both questioned and mocked, unlike in the US where as you say it is taken very seriously. |

Sorry have to say that I spent a lot of time boozing in the US when I was a young man and there were plenty of people under 21 who were no stranger to drink. Getting into places was hard without ID - that, I accept. Thankfully, Australia is nowhere near America's bureaucratic police state-style obsession with identity and so on. I recall a story of a British man in his 90s - 90s - being denied alcohol because he couldn't provide identity papers to an official in a supermarket. No one wants to live in a Soviet-style environment like that. I'd rather have mass public teenage drunkenness than live in a ID state.
