Sharing a container for shipping items

Hi all.
We have been told today that we probably don't have enough stuff to warrant the full use of a 20ft container (no, we're not gypsies!
).
The problem that seems to arise from this is that our stuff is taken away and then we have to wait for a half-load container to become available and hence this adds an undesirable number of weeks to the total transit time. Also, I'm a bit wary of having our stuff being stored as individual items and subsequently damaged or lost in their warehouse or when being handled. I liked the idea of watching our stuff being loaded onto the actual container and then the container being sealed.
Any advice please?
