CTP insurance is wrapped up in the rego fee in Victoria, which is currently $641.50 ($676.50 from April) - although this can be slightly lower if you live in a lower risk suburb (e.g. in the area I live, rego is currently $594.20 rather than $641.50).

So that is third party ins (yes have read you need more to make it up to fully comp), MOT and road tax in one?

It's the equivalent of road tax with third party insurance in one. The equivalent of MOT (roadworthy) is only required in Victoria when selling a vehicle.

For us personally the cost of comprehensive insurance is roughly the same BUT as has been said you also pay registration/ctp on top.

With Home insurance, is buildings covered by the rent and you just buy contents?

Buildings would be the responsibility of the owner but you would need your own contents insurance....same as in UK.

If you are a tenant, you only need contents insurance. landlord has to have buildings insurance.

If you are an owner/occupier, you buy buildings and contents and they vary hugely according to house size, location, rebuilding costs, etc. Although our contents only insurance as tenants cost us almost the same as buildings and contents combined as owners

A Toyota or a Honda can be had for 10k which some people swear by. A Holden is no disaster. Or an old dual cab. This is my offical advice.

Personally, and this is fairly new to me: I like to buck the trend and run old European cars like the classic Saabs etc : where, despite what people tell you in the UK and particularly Australia, are cheap to fix. Loads of parts, and some good specialists who can work fast. And they are well built, solid and engineered nicely. The interiors are a bit crap. This is because you can get one for several hundred dollars and then just fix everything. My first Saab cost me 300 bucks and there was nothing wrong with it. I only swapped it for another one to get a slightly bigger engine and the hatch rather than the sedan. I transferred parts from one to another...my wife was not amused...

My next car will be a Alfa Romeo - the thing is, in Melbourne you can find cars that people turn their noses up with because they don't understand them - so they run cheaper at retail - and then fix 'em up and have a bit of a ball with them.
