Re: Rolf Harris

Paedophilia is much more common that the, relatively, few people who are caught, it's the same with incest, both are, relatively, common although not that many cases are ever brought. In many families there are relatives, both male and female, who parents will not allow children to visit alone because of this, and in many places, particularly in theird world countries, but certainly in some parts of the USA, where incest is quite common, and in many cases thought to be a right by the males in the family, maybe this goes back to slavery times when the children of slaves were just thought of as chattels and of no account, so the men in the families could practice the sexual arts with. I don't condone anything like it, but it was an accepted 'norm' in those times, when there were no slaves, then the children in the family often took thier place.
For all we know there may even be paedophiles on BE, we know nothing about virtually anyone on here, (except those that we meet personally) other than what they post.
FWIW paedophiles do NOT just get their thrills from having sexual contact with your children, there are manay who get their thrills just from looking at photos of scantily clad children, and when in jail the most wanted items, for them, are shopping catalogues where children are in their underwear. In the past inmates were banned from being sent these catalogues according to both POs and Social Workers I have known. A police officer I knew said that on one occasion they searched a house, and found a whole room with the walls papered with those sorts of pictures, and just a single chair in the room, so obviously somewhere he could go to get his kicks.

As I said, far more complex than just "hang them from the rafters".........

. For alot of these victims, they have been robbed of the chance to a normal life, the act itself is just the beginning, and to be honest I find some of the arguments on here extremely distasteful.

I agree totally with both of theses statements.

I have said in several arguments on this forum that teenage girls should be allowed to be teenagers without fear of being taken advantage of.
They will be precocious, flirt, try out their new found sexuality. I don't think it's right for adults to take advantage of this. And let's face it, there are lots of decent men out there who wouldn't take advantage.

I've counselled numerous survivors of childhood sexual abuse and seen the damage it can do.
You can't even predict how it will affect some people.
One of the most traumatised people I ever saw had been groped through clothing by an adult male, while her mother was looking the other way.
She hadn't been raped or touched while naked but the trauma of this experience shattered her belief in the safety of the world and took her innocence.

So for anyone who thinks Rolf "only" groped girls, don't underestimate the trauma that can cause.

Its wrong in your law and your belief, you have no control of others beliefs or laws, the world would be a shambles if we all had to live under your rule !

Also why do you keep bring 40 and 60 year olds into it ???

Consent has a meaning, i very much doubt many 14 or even 16/18 year old girls would consent to sex with a 60 year old, so why keep banging that drum and over dramatising the issue ??

So even if these few 14 year olds who would 'consent' to sex with a 60 year old, should they be treated like an adult because of their adult decision?

Your view of the world seems a bit warped to me.

Whether they physically abuse or they collect photo's, a paedophile is a paedophile, as such should be forever put out of reach of anything that enables them to fulfill their sick fantasies. Whether that be a bullet to the head or life inprisonment isn't my decision, but it should be one or the other.

These people who advocate understanding, and counselling would soon change their minds if those being counselled, and understood were roaming free in their own neighbourhood, amongst their children.

A close friend of mine used to interrogate hard drives belonging to suspects, the images he saw left him near broken, a grown man sitting there crying. The victims need our support, the abusers need absolute condemnation. I think there are are still some standards, beliefs we simply shouldn't budge on, and this is one.

For all we know there could be victims on here aswell, which makes some of the posts even more grotesque

It's not about advocating understand and counselling for the offenders. It's about advocating understand and counselling in order to prevent people from becoming victims. You seem to be full great ideas of what should be done after the crime is committed. But the damage is done at this stage. What about prevention?

How are you going to prevent it? put anti paedo formula the water supply? We only ever get to know who they are once they've been caught, if we made much more of an example of them then that'd be the best prevention measure at our disposal.

Well I agree that we probably can't prevent this as you'd expect people who are like that are not likely to come forward for help. But, I don't think paedophiles assault kids believing that they will get caught. So, making punishments harder will not be a deterrent. It will more likely mean they will become smarter at covering their tracks.

But what's the alternative? They hardly advertise their activities as it is, at least doing it the harsh way means we only ever need worry about future offenders, anyone who's offended previously would be out of the equation.

I remember one interview that the copper in charge of the Daniel Morcombe case gave a while ago. He said that making jail terms lengthier wasn't going to help the issue - it won't stop the abuse from happening; it would more likely result in the child being murdered. No idea whether that would be right or wrong, but an interesting perspective from someone who, presumably, has some idea what he's talking about.

General comment.

When people go on and on about this subject it starts to look like they're too fascinated by it.

A certain number of people in the population obviously have these urges, compounded by a power trip in some cases.

They are not popping out of every bush you pass though.

Through greater education and openness, victims feel more able to come forward, and more checks are in place to oversee those working with children.

Sensible precautions by parents and kids can go a long way to prevent attacks also.

Rolf Harrris was convicted and sentenced, move on for your own mental health.
