Angry replacing aircon unit - how hard can it be?

bloody aircons broken cost us $135 for a 1hr consultation and guess what it took the aircon guy exactly one hour to tell us it was broke

He then passed us on to someone else to order the parts and he quoted $1,500 for a new unit or $730 for this old one to be repaired yet we can buy a new one exactly the same spec, same make and with 5 year guarantee for $839

So how easy is it to take the old one out and put the new one in? Do we need an aircon person to take out the old and fit the new or can we buy the new unit ourselves and slot it in where the old one has been

anyone know the answer to this please ta

Same thing just happened to us. We had an old one (given free) fitted last year and got a guy out the paper to fit it for us (professionally). He fitted it for $400.

It lasted a year (we never expected anything else really) so we bought a new one from Harvey's and phoned the same guy out, who took the old one down for us (and disposed) and fitted the new one for $300. It's a 6 hr job so we thought that was bloody brill, considering.

I can pass on his details if you like, he lives over in Springfield Lakes but travels all over Brissie. He is a fully qualified installer, works in the industry. Top bloke.

I think you would need an aircon guy to de-gas the unit. I think the gas is quite expensive and can be reused. If the pipes go into exactly the same positions on the unit then that would be straightforward - as would the electrical connection. I reckon buy the unit for $839 and get an aircon guy to install it. If it is straightforward it should not cost more than a few hundred dollars - you could site the unit yourself which would save money.

Yip forgot to mention the de-gasing bit.

Sonly, the husband can come and do it for you if interested. He's good and very very reasonable. Well, so I'm told anyway, not needed his services myself
