I cut our consumption by 30% by changing a few lightbulbs, changing a pool pump and removing some phantom current drawing devices. You dont have to spend a fortune to start saving a chunk of money - just think about it and do a few smart things.
Most smart things are only available to people with mortgages or homeowners and not tenants.

Who says the rich aren't properly taxed and why should their hard work, luck or whatever got them into that position be responsible for looking after those who won't look after themselves, aside from those who can't look after themselves.

It's that attitude, shared with the attitude of this government that has seen the strong economy, built by the previous conservative government slump, and continue to slump.

Fark me that makes me angry.

I say it. I say it because I know what the top rate is. I say it because I know about the $21 trillion in offshore havens that should have been collected by national governments. I say it because Mitt Romney pays 13% and Jimmy Carr pays 1% and so do all their pals.

Perhaps if Howard hadn't allowed house prices to go to Pluto and made borrowing easier than counting to three we wouldn't be looking at some of the world's most unaffordable housing.

But we are. Conservative governments - don't make me laugh. There hasn't been a conservative government for decades. Reagan damn near bankrupted the US.

Tax is now so low that we are in a situation where people can seriously argue that 45% is too high.

So you get rich you afford good accountants. If it's not illegal then so be it.

With that attitude you stiffle success and breed mediocrity.

Again, how was Howard in control of house prices going to Pluto? The UK and America saw house price boom in that period too.

So lets stiffle the success and wealth of the rich so the poor can afford to buy a house. Hey I'm all for cheaper price of housing but that's rediculous.

How is that an argument against Howard? What we are seeing is not conservatism or socialism. Those days are gone. Conservatism has been betrayed by out of control capitalists and free marketeers to the point that a culture has now been created that objects to a man earning 200k a day paying 90% tax.

I mean arguing against Howard being good for the housing market, by comparing him to what happened in UK/US.

Well depends. In my view and it appears your view the big increases over the last decade are bad. But for my elderly parents and my inheritance it's been fantastic. Nothing to do with Howard though. Would have shot up anyway.

Ye sit would have gone up unless someone responsible in government controlled it. I'm not sure what good it does people in their 70s and 80s to have a house no one else can afford.

45% is huge.

Maybe instead of needing more and more tax, for more and more silly ideas, the government should only provide a basic minimum of services.

Then we could have a lower tax take, and could spend the extra money on what we want, not what the government says we should have.

45% is tiny. 92% is huge. I always think people who argue the state should only provide a basic minimum should go and give Somalia a trial run for a few months and see how they get on with that before prescribing it for the rest of us.
