Is this really true?
I read this a while ago. Does anyone think its true?
Back in the Victorian days when gentlemen could get their jollies outside the house and regularly did, the poor old wives were left at home to cater for themselves or not as the case may be. Accordingly they frequently had fits of "hysteria" (hysteria being derived from the Latin word for "womb") which required visits from the doctor, the doctor would be shown up to the ladies boudoir where he would, er, discreetly massage her, the lady would then be calmed and relaxed and the doctor would go to visit his next patient. When electricity was invented new patent "massaging machines" for hysteria relief became all the rage and it is estimated that as many as 30% of homes in London were connected to the electric grid in the early stages of electrification in order to satisfy this demand. Thus the demand for vibrators basically sparked (no pun intended) the surge (oops) in electricity use at the beginning of the last century, a fact which will never be found in any economic, social or industrial history book. Any ideas? |

Head to fingers: Google before you post......
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_hysteria http://francescamiller.com/naughty.html :o:o:o:o:o the only mystery for me now is why (given the women I know) it didn't result in three phase 450V or high pressure compressed air supplies to houses as well...... :) |
Re: Is this really true?
Yup, twas the main reason for dildos and later, vibrators. Goes back 100s if not 1000s of years too. Sure I read somewhere about phallic shaped items being found in egyptian tombs:unsure:
Luckily, I NEVER suffer from hysteria:whistle: |

Re: Is this really true?
There was a recent mainstream film about the invention of vibrators starring Michael Fassbender and a couple of others.
Sexual relief implements have been around for years....so has a doctors 'bedside manner'!! |

Re: Is this really true?
Yep - definitely true.
First electrical home appliances were not washing machines, refrigerators or toasters. They were vibrators to treat female frustrations. For a completely fascinating read on sexual habits of humans and why our societal model of monogamous lifelong pair bonding is so totally screwed up and damaging have a read of "Sex at Dawn" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_at_Dawn). If you can get past the somewhat academic style and the seemingly endless chapters talking about monkey sex, its pretty thought provoking. |
