A question for the self employed

How do you decide what your hourly rate is going to be?

I have been asked to quote for doing a job, I know how much the materials will cost but no idea what to ask for labour.

$25 an hour if you want a lot of work

$35 an hour if you want a reasonable amount

$80 an hour if you want to stay home most days

No, sorry, I have no real idea. But that bottle of red wine just went straight to my head... I haven't had a drink for months before today...

My OH's ex boss told my hubby that when he was quoting for jobs (welding and fabricating) he would charge $75 a hour.

I'd say you'd be looking at least $50 an hour.

I'm not sure what part of Oz you are in but I can give you an idea of what the hourly rates are in Perth.

Painting is $60 per hour.
Maintenance/handman is $30 per hour.

Hope that helps.

I use a lot of subbies. going rate here is $35 carpenter, builder, plasterer, concreter etc.
$65 electrician. These vary up and down a little but not much. I know of handymen that charge $60 but I dont know who gives them the work

we work over australia and it doesnt seem to vary a huge amount. Most places that is the rate I woudl expect to pay and I wouldnt pay more than $45 a man even out of hours.

Thats too much Jazzys. $ 40 an hour for that line of work is good both for you and the client. you could go to 50 but if you want ongoing work.....

My company charges skilled tradesmen out at 81 ph doing stainless steel work and we aren't the cheapest

I usually quote per M², though some jobs have tasks that require me to charge a per hour rate. I charge $35-$40 for me & $25 for my T.A. [$40 if it's pulling up old lino or carpet]

I guess they mean a tradesman paintinsg as opposed to a non qualified handyman. I think we may move to Perth - the rates seem a lot better :)
