A question about UV index and Ozone layer

Hi

Is standing under the sun in a day with UV index=7 in Australia is as dangerous as standing under the sun in a day with UV=7 in a country without Ozone depletion?

Cheers,

Cheers,

One of the most intelligent questions in years deserving of an answer! Not sure if the index takes that into account. 7 is quite low for an Aussie summer BTW - the index compared to the UK signifies an end to th practise of groups of people sitting around on the grass in public and saying 'isn't this lovely' .

Cheers,

The UV Index is calculated for clear skies, at local solar noon, when the sun is at its highest, using total ozone analyses and forecasts derived from satellite data and GASP wind fields.

So yes, the Index value takes the local Ozone measurements into account.

I haven't looked at this for a while but the last I heard was that the southern ozone hole was recovering (i.e. closing) and the northern one was opening up. Anyone got any more up to date info?

Probably due to the Chinese hacking open all those old, discarded fridges that we have replaced (with Chinese units...)

If it's a properly calculated index then it will be the same everywhere. The measurement 7 should indicate a set amount of UV exposure, in the same way that 20 degrees celcius is the same everywhere.

We were referring to the holes, not the numbers!

You would think so:confused:

Are the holes not measure by the numbers? If so, are the numbers the same:blink::confused:

Some of us have lost the thread - and I'm not sure that it's me <g>.

Burbage was quoting me but I think referring to the OP with his post. I was quoting ML, who was straying off the OP into the ozone hole distribution.

I'm getting a headache....

Bugger... it's my fault again and I can't shift the blame :frown:
